Well over half of British voters now want to leave the European Union, according to an opinion poll that shows anti-EU sentiment is sweeping through all three main political parties.
The Opinium/Observer survey finds that 56% of people would probably or definitely vote for the UK to go it alone if they were offered the choice in a referendum. About 68% of Conservative voters want to leave the EU, against 24% who want to remain; 44% of Labour voters would probably choose to get out, against 39% who would back staying in, while some 39% of Liberal Democrats would probably or definitely vote to get out, compared with 47% who would prefer to remain in the EU.
The findings will make sobering reading for all three major parties, which are at risk of losing support to the buoyant anti-EU party Ukip – now two points ahead of the Lib Dems on 10%.
Overall just 28% of likely voters think the EU is a "good thing" while 45% think it is a "bad thing". The 18-34 age group is the only one in which there is a clear majority backing the EU, with 44% saying membership is good, against 25%.
The poll will pile yet more pressure on David Cameron to negotiate a tough deal on the EU budget as he prepares for a Brussels summit, beginning on Thursday, at which EU leaders will attempt to hammer out a financial deal for the union for the seven years from 2014.

“Cool Britannica” was the just about silliest marketing slogan ever. Great Britain is (was?) famous for its dignity, stiff upper lip, tradition, and gravitas-even its true eccentrics had a certain nobility-and Blair’s “Cool Britannica” just made a mockery of all that’s best about Britain.
The modern Royal family is doing a good job of that too.
Yes. The mass outpouring of faux sentimentality over Diana’s death was revolting. If a country must have a royal family, I prefer they act like royalty, whether it’s the Victorian style or the Restoration style of Charles II. Not that either of those would fly these days, for different reasons.
Speaking of royalty, there’s an excellent series called “Monarchy” narrated by David Starkey, about the history of the English/British monarchy from as far back as the Anglo-Saxon “first man among equals”, through Alfred The Great, Viking raids and Norman Conquest, Plantaganets, York and Lancaster, Tudors and Stuarts, Cromwell, Gorious Revolution, Hanoverian dynasty, Victoria amd Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, change to Windsor.
The first two parts can be seen on Netflix, amd the rest on You Tube (make sure to watch the UK version, there’s a US version which is compressed and shortened).
It’s really good and makes it all almost understandable, makes it very interesting without resorting to dumbed-down gimmickry.
Davod Starkey also did a series on Henry VIII: The Mind Of A Tyrant from his youth to death. (It’s also available on You Tube). Really excellent music, so excellent that I bought the soundtrack. No one does history like the British when they stick to the straightforward manner.

in all fairness, since Diana’s death, things have calmed down and now with Princess Kate, things are on the way up.
It is kind of funny that the English have mostly been ruled by foreign kings: from 1066 to Edward I, the kings spoke French (or rather Gascon), then after the last English king Richard III died, it was first Welsh kings (Tudors), then Scottish (Stewarts), then a Dutchman (William of Orange) and then Germans (Hanoverians), Germans and more Germans. I think Princess Diana was the first English person to marry into the Royal family in centuries :)

Surprisingly, yes. The Royals have done worse in the 80s and 90s.
