WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) - The damage caused by Hurricane Sandy sent U.S. jobless claims soaring by 78,000 in the week ended Nov. 10 to an 18-month high of 439,000, according to the latest government figures. A Labor Department official on Thursday said claims surged in the eastern parts of the country that laid in the path of the storm....

Obama, the new “Hitler” destroying and murdering the USA military & public servants in Libya, destroying the USA economy & jobs....and effectively working to destroy the entire USA!!! IMHO....Obama should be impeached for treason.
“SANDY’S FAULT!” - Barack HUSSEIN Obama (The Mother of all Whiners)
-— When has the government ever laid someone off just because there was no work? ——
They do work?
I guess even Reuters doesn’t go for Broken Window fallacy anymore.
That's monthly. Which, of course, will also be blamed on Sandy in December.
“Prior period adjustment” is a well used phrase in accounting and statistical work. I expect that is the phrase that should actually be used to explaine this sharp inrcrease in unemployment claims, indicating an understatement of claims in prior periods.
An honest mistake, of course.
I call BS on Sandy being responsible. There was a jump in layoffs last week, at least reported layoffs.
Gee, let me think... what else happened last week that might give business owners pause?
Disasters are disastrous; who’da thunk it.

He NEEDS to be thoroughly ridiculed for this irresponsible piece of “journalism”
Dozens of companies announce layoffs, and specifically tie it to Obamacare, and this guy blames it on the weather???
“It’s Romney’s fault I won the election”...
Regional figures need to be looked at in order to help tell what part the storm played and what part Atlas-shrugging played. It’s unlikely Sandy has anything to do with layoffs in the Midwest or further.
How, with no gasoline, did tens of thousands of New Yorkers and New Jerseyans flock to the unemployment office?
How, with no power, with even FEMA offices closed for weather, were unemployment offices even open?
How, with local goverment employees equally impacted, were local government employees able to staff non-essential government offices?
To be fair, it’s this newsdroid rather than Washington that’s blaming it all on the storm. It’s too obvious, and crow is going to have to be eaten.
how UNEXPECTED!! that jobless claims would suddenly rise just after the election!!!
I am SHOCKED! (not)
IMHO, Solis and her thugs started working on the UE rate last June. Shading it down each month to boost nobama.
It's about to the point where we can't believe anything from these bastards.
Libs (and some dumb-ass conservatives) have ALWAYS claimed that these disasters are GOOD for employment — look at all the roofers now in demand the story goes.
We passed that point on January 20, 2009.
For reference:
“Hurricane Katrina caused the number of Americans filing for unemployment to surge last week, far exceeding an already high Wall Street estimate, according to a government report Thursday.
The Labor Department said 398,000 initial claims for jobless insurance were filed in the week ended Sept. 10, up from a revised 327,000 the week prior. Economists had expected 350,000 claims, according to Briefing.com.
The 71,000 increase is the biggest jump in ten years, while the total 398,000 number is the highest in two.”
