Britain has invaded all but 22 countries in the world in its long and colourful history, new research has found.
Every schoolboy used to know that at the height of the empire, almost a quarter of the atlas was coloured pink, showing the extent of British rule.
But that oft recited fact dramatically understates the remarkable global reach achieved by this country.
A new study has found that at various times the British have invaded almost 90 per cent of the countries around the globe.
The analysis of the histories of the almost 200 countries in the world found only 22 which have never experienced an invasion by the British.
Among this select group of nations are far-off destinations such as Guatemala, Tajikistan and the Marshall Islands, as well some slightly closer to home, such as Luxembourg.
The analysis is contained in a new book, All the Countries We've Ever Invaded: And the Few We Never Got Round To.
Stuart Laycock, the author, has worked his way around the globe, through each country alphabetically, researching its history to establish whether, at any point, they have experienced an incursion by Britain.

The countries never invaded by the British: Andorra, Belarus, Bolivia, Burundi, Central African Republic, Chad, Congo, Republic of, Guatemala, Ivory Coast, Kyrgyzstan, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Mali, Marshall Islands, Monaco, Mongolia, Paraguay, Sao Tome and Principe, Sweden, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Vatican City.
This article really stretches the definition of ‘invaded’. It counts any shore raid by British licensed privateers. That makes it pretty questionable to me.
The British are responsible for much of the spread of civilization...not a bad thing at all.
Can we say “HITLER”?
I think he also included those countries where these were imported or discarded by tourists.
They ignored the vatican. The british did not want what they were pedaling. The other countries wern/t worth the effort. All of the other countries are now better off for the British influence. Too bad the Brits can’t invade themselves and get back soem the the 18th and 19th century backbone. You had to know that when the British navy adopted the motto of ‘we surrender’ it did not have long to survive.
Much of the guilt of the left is due just to this map. They simply are filled with guilt about colonialism and figure the best way to make amends is to destroy the culture that provided it.
In their twisted minds, that will make the world a better place.
the British Empire in the nineteenth century by and large served as a means of establishing relatively free governments in many areas of the world that would otherwise have remained in a state of anarchy or despotism. Its existence also served to open vast territories to economic development that benefited the entire world.
... and in the process improved the lives of countless millions by bringing with them the rule of law and property rights. among other things.
