Obama: Americans voted for tax hikes on rich By Olivier Knox, Yahoo! News | The Ticket – 5 hrs ago

Claiming a mandate from his election romp over Mitt Romney, President Barack Obama announced on Friday that he had invited congressional leaders to the White House next week for talks on how to steer the battered economy away from a "fiscal cliff." Obama said he was open to compromise with Republicans—but that any final deal needed to raise taxes on the richest Americans.

"This was a central question during the election," the president said in brief remarks in the East Room of the White House. "It was debated over and over again, and on Tuesday night we found out that a majority of Americans agree with my approach.

"Our job now is to get a majority in Congress to reflect the will of the American people," Obama said. "I'm not wedded to every detail of my plan. I'm open to compromise. I'm open to new ideas. I'm committed to solving our fiscal challenges. But I refuse to accept any approach that isn't balanced."

The president, who did not take questions on Friday, campaigned in part on a plan that would extend most of the Bush-era tax cuts, but allow them to expire for individuals making more than $200,000 or families pulling in $250,000. Republicans have said they want to prolong all of those rate reductions.

Obama said, as he has all year, that this means both sides agree on extending the middle-class reductions—and that doing so should not require "long negotiations or drama. ... Let's extend the middle-class tax cuts right now. Let's do that right now." (Republicans have resisted; extending those rates would reduce the party's leverage on tax hikes affecting the wealthy.)

Time for some anarchy followed by a coup. I think the choice may be between a benevolent right wing dictatorship that allows a reasonable amount of capitalism vs a tyrannical leftist dictatorship. One of the beneficial side effects of a right wing dictatorship might be an improvement in the gene pool.
I’m tired of playing nice.

The rich mostly voted for him...so, give them what they want. The economy is wrecked, anyway. Get rid of their foundation loopholes, too. Go at ‘em.

The Bush Tax Cuts are going to be allowed to expire as part of the compromise. The taxes on those making more than $200,000 are on top of these tax increases. Then, add in Obamacare taxes.

He's right.

They were given a clear choice in the final week of the election: "Revenge" or "Love of Country". They chose revenge.

Revenge against "the man". Revenge against the rich. Revenge against everybody that has won life's lottery and isn't sharing with them. It's the French Revolution all over again, only this time it's being instigated by the "crown".

“I don’t consider 200K rich or 250K for a family rich “

It is by the standard of a third world country, which is exactly Obama’s vision for America.

He wants to turn America into a version of Mexico.

let’s see:

(1) Obama lost more votes from 2008 than Romney did compared to McCain in 2008; that low turn out for him was as much a no-confidence vote on him as anything else;

(2) Congress is supposed to control the federal government’s purse strings, not the president;

(3) all spending and tax bills are supposed to start out in the House of Representatives;

(4) the entire House of Representatives was up for a vote, and the GOP retains its majority there;

so, one could say the only “mandate” from the electorate was for a compromise with the House Obama has not been willing to make, on anything at any time;

but, there is no evidence in the vote results of any mandate for higher taxes on anyone.

Really?

Cause last time I check Republicans won the House.

And that’s where the tax laws start.

Now I’m sure the House is going to give you everything you want, but they shouldn’t.

and yet he is remarkably quiet about the notion of paying taxes on his billion dollar OFAY fund ,,,

this moron doesn’t seem to realize that wealthy earners, and all businesses, don’t pay taxes, they incur costs, which are passed along to the consumer. but it makes good theater I guess.

doubt this mouth breather ever got a ‘C’ or higher in any math/science class.

“No, they voted for free contraception, amnesty for illegal aliens, and subsidized abortion.”

All those, but they bought into the the class warfare bit. They absolutely want to schwack producers with higher taxes. They also want Obamaphones.

The Bush cuts expiring means a tax increase.

Taxes are going up already. To say that taxes are not on the table is simply a lie.

The Obama Tax Increase will hit on January 2013 paychecks.

Why is our side not shouting that out in a soundbite? You know the liberals would be

-- (3) all spending and tax bills are supposed to start out in the House of Representatives; --

Just bills for raising revenue. See Article I, Section 7 of the United States Constitution.

All bills for raising Revenue shall originate in the House of Representatives; but the Senate may propose or concur with Amendments as on other Bills.

The check on the Senate being a spendthrift in the House, which must at least concur with all spending bills.

This debt hole? 100% of it lies at the feet of Congress. The spending issue? Also Congress.

The press, with the help of Congress, has worked an accountability shifting trick (but its effect will be temporary when the house of cards collapses), where the president stands in as the setter of fiscal policy.

Anyway, the point of my post was a nitpick as to what must originate in the House. Even that is a sham, as the Senate routinely takes House bills, guts them completely, and puts in taxing language. This is found, by the Courts, to be a bill for raising revenue, originated in the House.

The whole thing is corrupt, in my mind, corrupt to the point of illegitimacy. The House, the Senate, and the Courts. Banana Republic. It deserves respect for the same reason the mafia does; not because it is honorable and just, but because it is a corrupt killing machine.

I’m genuinely afraid.

We can blame our candidate, his campaign and its operatives, Rove, purists, the primary process, Chris Christie, evangelicals, ORCA, the media, whatever.... But our problems are much, much bigger than that.

We were presented with a choice and in electing Obama, Americans CHOSE Obama’s message of revenge, the punishment of political “enemies”, the debasement of our daughters as “Julias” and via “first time” ads, the booing of God and Israel, the derision of small business owners, forcing religious institutions to bend to the state’s will, children singing songs idolizing Obama and blaming their parents for perceived ills.... and so very much more.

Americans CHOSE THAT and the democrats are going to double down on delivery.

I’d like to see the limo libs like Clooney, Streisand, Moore, Buffet, Gates lead by example and volunteer to contribute an additional 5% of their wealth to the Treasury. Or simply decline to take any deductions on their next tax return. (All completely legal and easy to do.)

You know, for the good of the country.

we found out that a majority of Americans agree with my approach.

What I found most disturbing was his in your face attitude and the forcefullness of his tone of voice. He's been enboldened (sp?) by this election and since he's now in his last term, it's going to be full speed ahead and screw you if you don't like it....

This is really scarey.....

Let's stop calling them 'democrats.' THEY ARE SOCIALISTS. And Obama's desired "balanced approach" always means more policies that move us in a net interventionist / socialist direction.
