FBI Investigation Led to Petraeus Resignation
NewsMax ^ | 11/09/12 | Ronald Kessler

Ronald Kessler reporting from Washington, D.C. — The resignation of David H. Petraeus as CIA director followed an FBI investigation of many months, raising the question of why he was not forced out until after the election.

In his letter of resignation, Petraeus cited an extra-marital affair he had been having. “After being married for over 37 years, I showed extremely poor judgment by engaging in an extramarital affair,” Petraeus said in his letter to President Obama. “Such behavior is unacceptable, both as a husband and as the leader of an organization such as ours.”

Petraeus, who had a distinguished military career, revealed no additional details. However, an FBI source says the investigation began when American intelligence mistook an email Petraeus had sent to his girlfriend as a reference to corruption. Petraeus was commander of U.S. Forces in Afghanistan from July 4, 2010 until July 18, 2011.

The investigation began last spring, but the FBI then pored over his emails when he was stationed in Afghanistan.

The woman who was having an affair with Petraeus is a journalist who had been writing about him.

You’re right. I’d think that having the affair out in the open frees up Petraeus to spill his guts. Nothing for him to lose — except maybe his life. He’ll be found the victim of a “suicide”.

I’m pissed that Obama didn’t present the evidence to him before the election instead of a day or two after. But he had to wait; it Petraeus had nothing to lose then, he could’ve told the story and brough down Hussein.

Why wAs Clinton’s affair okay but Patraeus’s isn’t? Patraeus is in the process of being scapegoated on Benghazi.

The FBI didn't "happen" to see something, any more than Gloria Allred "happened" to come into possession of material concerning Herman Cain, and FBI most assuredly was not outraged by the refusal to make the information public.

The FBI (Geheime Staatspolizei, Komitet Gosudarstvennoy Bezopasnosti, whatever) was told to do opposition research of ALL possible candidates who might pose a threat to the regime. In the course of their dirt-digging they found something, and this is their cover story. And once compromised, they had no intention of getting rid of him; he had become far more valuable to the regime.

Those questions aren't of the slightest interest to anyone who has any inkling of the Byzantine labyrinth of Washington intrigue and the workings of the secret police. The interesting question is why did Patraeus signal his reason for leaving? He did not need to do so, and if he had only said he was leaving for personal reasons the regime would almost certainly have been willing to let it go at that. Now he's disgraced himself and harmed his wife and family. He did not need to make them pay that price. The question, again, is WHY?

Because in the military, adultery is actually a crime according to the UCMJ , Article 134.

Do I understand this right? Petraeus had the affair in Spring of 2011, and the FBI found out about it. This was when Petraeus was commander in Afganistan.
Then 0zer0 appoints Petraeus to the CIA also in the Spring of 2011. So 0zer0 had to have known that Petraeus was having this affair when he appointed him, or shortly there after.
Petraeus continues to compromise his emails for months after this, with the FBI tracking it all time. I assume this must be in late 2011. Again, 0zer0 had to have known about this.
And 0zer0 didn’t have any problem with any of this in 2011 or even early 2012. The FBI couldn’t figure out why 0zer0 didn’t fire him long before he did.
It is only after Petraeus is scheduled to testify on Benghazi that now 0zer0 is worried about the security breach? Do I have this right?
If so, there is no way to look at this other than to believe that 0zer0 set Petraeus up to use this trump card whenever he needed it, and he needed it after Benghazi. No wonder Petraeus testified to Congress that the video was the cause of the Benghazi fiasco. This just confirms everything I ever thought about 0zer0 and his admin.

Why? Because he had no choice. If he’d resigned for family reasons, the FBI investigation would have surfaced, magically, and Petraeus would have been left with no honor at all. By confronting the blackmail (notice that I use the word rather freely), he short-circuited the damage Obama could do. Which also means that Petraeus has no reason to lie when questioned (as he will be) by Congress about Benghazi.

“FBI” in this context just means Holder’s agents with a federal badge.

Does anyone imagine a spymaster must have a squeaky clean personal life?

Holder’s agents are no doubt gathering opposition research on everyone who could be an ally or a threat (or both at the same time) as their full time job. The information is there to be used when needed.

Petraeus’ biggest crime is that he didn’t (as far as we know) have his own team gathering the same intel on Holder. J Edgar Hoover made this job one and had a life-long career regardless of who sat in the White House. Petraeus needed to have files on Holder and Obama and he’d still be in his job and his biographer still at his side.

Maybe he is mad at the adultress and wanted to expose her...? Maybe he has some info that she turned him in ( a la Monica L and Linda Tripp),,,He had to know once he said “affair” people would be sniffing out “who” it was. ...I think he is paying her back for setting him up.

I do have to get the General credit for not forcing his wife to come out and stand by his side while he admits to this,,,like so many other politicians do.

They just did this to the AZ Attorney General, whom, is protecting AZ and before that, took care of Tucson School District’s anti-American, La Raza ethnic studies program as School Chief.

I read it as the affair was noticed, and the FBI went back over the Afghan emails to see how long it had been going on,,I’m not sure anyone knew about it real time, so to speak.

Then again, everything coming out of DC is tainted, so who knows?
