Conservatives lambast Romney, vow to take over Republican Party
By Erik Wasson - 11/07/12 02:43 PM ET

Conservative leaders on Wednesday lashed out at Mitt Romney, saying his attempts to paint himself as a centrist and hide his principles cost him the presidency.

They vowed to wage a war to put the Tea Party in charge of the Republican Party by the time it nominates its next presidential candidate.

“The battle to take over the Republican Party begins today and the failed Republican leadership should resign,” said Richard Viguerie, a top activist and chairman of ConservativeHQ.com.

He said the lesson on Romney’s loss to President Obama on Tuesday is that the GOP must “never again” nominate a “a big government established conservative for president.”

Jenny Beth Martin of Tea Party Patriots said Romney failed to make the kind of strong case for conservatism that would have won the election.

She described Romney as a “weak, moderate candidate hand-picked by the country club elite Republican establishment.”

“They didn’t see a clear distinction so they went with what they know,” she said of voters.

“It should have been a landslide if Romney had run as a true conservative,” said Brent Bozell of the Media Research Center.

“Romney took all the right stances, no question. The problem was not communicating them on the national stage with President Obama,” said Marjorie Dannenfelser, the head of the pro-life Susan B. Anthony List.

Martin argued that there was no repudiation of the Tea Party by the electorate because Tea Party values were not firmly articulated.

“This is not the death of the Tea Party,” Martin said.

“Tea Partiers will take over the Republican party in the next four years,” Viguerie said.

In the meantime, conservatives will work to ensure that congressional Republicans do not compromise their principles in fiscal talks with Obama, he said.

“Conservatives and Tea Partiers are just sick and tired of Republican leaders compromising on the state and national level with Democrats that grow the size of government,” Viguerie said. “We are going to hold their feet to the fire.”

Bozell said conservative groups need to up their financial pressure on GOP lawmakers unless they agree to a series of demands, including again vowing to approve of no tax increases for anyone.

Are you anti CHOICE? Don’t qualify, you said “choice”, not abortion, but “choice”! Are you anti CHOICE?

Use the enemy’s language and lose the argument before it starts!

Lot of religious bigots in that crowd.

Ah, so refusing to drink the GOP-E hemlock and "holding noses" to vote for "lesser evils" now makes one a "religious bigot?" I think you better go and pull that plank out of your eye, bub.

because all you flipping purists sat on your asses whining at home while the wolf waltzed in the door. there’s a wide continuum and only one middle, but yeah, you and your ilk, the evangelicals, stayed home pouting

Prove it. Give us the numbers of evangelicals to show that they (we) all stayed home.

I thought Romney was supposed to attract all those moderates and independents from both parties. That’s why u didn’t need the conservative vote. That is why the GOPe’s wanted him. What did all you moderates and independents do on election day?

Yep, that was Team Romney's cold "etch-a-sketch" calculation back during the primaries---get just enough Conservative votes to win the nomination, and then chuck Conservatives to the side and go for the "moderates" and "independents."

We don't need no stinkin' Conservative votes now----that was their thinking, and we warned them then that this strategy would bite them in the arse, and it has now come to pass.

Here’s my proof. Romney lost!!!!!!
He did not win enough votes of moderates and independents
from both sides, as the GOPe’s thought he would.

My advice. Pick a different type of candidate next time.

I don’t know how Obama got elected, to paraphrase Pauline Kael (I think), I don’t know anyone who voted for him!

I knew people who voted for Obama's re-election but not anymore.

That says nothing about the evangelical vote.

You don’t know how people voted.

If you’re going by what you read from the media, I have some land to sell you.

There are a lot of really myopic, angry people looking for someone to blame.

It’s conservative’s fault, they stayed home.

It’s conservative’s fault, they voted third party.

It’s evangelical’s fault, they stayed home.

It’s evangelical’s fault, they voted third party.

It’s ____________’s fault, they.......

Always looking for a scapegoat.

Did it occur to “anyone” that election fraud was just as likely the cause of the loss as anything else they could dream up?

We can play the blame game all we want, but the facts are, we got what we got and now is the time to decide what we’re going to do with what we’ve been given.

My advice to you and to those who think like you.
Pick a different type of candidate next time.
Romney NEVER reached out to conservatives and trashed them
during the primary. Then he treated Obama with kid gloves. Conservatives did not owe one single vote
to Romney. I voted early in Tn for Romney, but it was a vote
against Obama, not really for Romney.

Yep. The biggest issue that could have been used against Obama that he could not pass off as “Bush’s fault” is the horrendous Obamacare. With Romney has the nominee that couldn’t be done because he is the grandfather of this sort of program on a local level but, still it’s kinda the biggest thing Romney is known for as Governor.

That comment had nothing to do with why conservative base stayed home. Romney won MO and the person who said that was punished by his state voters.

Nice try though.

2 things beat Mourdock, the word RAPE in a debate, and a 3rd party candidate. If either of these were not there he would have won.

Mourdock is a great man. Who in their right mind would put themselves and family though a grinder like this with every conceivable trick and trap set? This is why we have such a abundance of trash politicians, the wicked ones actually enjoy this kind of maniacal gamesmanship. I’m sick of the “elite” trashing Richard and throwing him under the bus, shame on them.

I am proud to have donated, set hundreds of signs, campaigned and stood 12 hours at a polling place for him. What did you do?

I support beating the democrat party. I will vote for whomever wins the GOP primaries.

I always vote.

True. Romney refused to go in on Obama like they went in on him. He played the “he’s a nice guy and did his best” card.

Are you freakin kidding me? Romney did a great job. It’s the lazy pouting dumbass conservatives fault we lost.

The 2010 election went well. Why didn't the GOP royalty pick up that ball and run with it?

Romney ran a “Johnny One Note Campaign” He failed to hammer away on what will happen when Obama gets returned; The Obama 2013 Tax Increases. The impact of Obama’s energy policies...The impact of Supreme Court Appointments.. 18,000 new IRS agents and on and on. Including rampant corruption. Instead we got a sales pitch on executive ability but not the reason why one should toss the old model and buy his.

“You Romney lovers kill me. I see you were successful with the liberal you forced on us. Conservatives are for principles. I did vote for Romney but I refuse to lie and say he did a good job. He goes down the history books as a loser along with McCain, Dole and now Romney. What do all three have in common? They were NOT conservative! Good job liberal Republicans.”

Exactly. A liberal “R” will never win.
