'I feel like I was robbed': Runners frustrated, some angry after city puts brakes on NYC Marathon

Runner Eliza Wierzbinska frowns with her marathon number at the Javits Center on Saturday. Even though she lives in New York City, she has sympathy for the runners who traveled in for the marathon and spent a lot of money to get to the Big Apple.

Marathoner Heather Nerhood, after flying in from Texas for the now-canceled race, couldn’t just cool her heels Saturday.

Along with hundreds of other disappointed marathoners, Nerhood burned off her frustration by running through Central Park.

“We were upset [Friday] because the announcement was made while we were at the Javits Center picking up our bibs,” said Nerhood, a 41-year-old kindergarten teacher, referring to Mayor Bloomberg’s last-minute change of heart that slammed the brakes on the race.

Exactly. What a pack of idiots. Why did they even think running the marathon would be either possible or advisable? But since the arrogant prig in charge of the Road Runners club is blaming the cancellation on the media (!) and Can’t understand why New Yorkers would object to her use of generators, fuel and other scarce resources, I guess this must be a runner thing and we wouldn’t understand

They (the runners) are pre-paid for next year's marathon.

Assuming the liberal twits that run New York City can get the place cleaned up by then.

I know a lot of people who do marathons and triathlons. I'm sure there are lots of readers here who participate in these races. Their commitment to a healthy lifestyle is to be commended. I have also worked many races in my community, both marathons and triathlons, so I have encountered these people first hand.

I have to say that there are some people who run who have serious obsessive-compulsive disorder issues, sometimes by their own admission. They are fixated on their training or their race, to the disregard of everyone around them. I have witnessed race participants completely lose it and start screaming at race volunteers. One time this happened in front of me and the woman was yelling at a 16-year-old volunteer who had taken time out of her weekend to come and help and wound up in tears. All because the girl couldn't find her registration packet. I stepped in and told the woman that if she couldn't control herself, she was going to have to leave or I would have her escorted out. Later, I looked up her name and found out she was a physician. The whole incident completely soured me on helping out at these races.

So this attitude among the racers does not surprise me one bit.

If you want to run, there’s a whole big old nation out there Forrest. So STFU, find a road and go run somewhere.

But as long as you’re in New York, why don’t you put on your big boy pants and go lend a hand instead of whining.

Something tells me Ms. Wierzbinska will have to move to an undisclosed address, ditch her cell phone, and go icognito. Contact with the public from now on will be unpleasant in the extreme.

why would these idiots fly to a devastated city? How many tickets to Dresden were used after the bombing? Do these jokers have no common sense? Who goes ahead and flies to a devastated area if you are not going to help? Ridiculous.

I agree with you. New York City made a big deal about continuing the race and then cancelled it at the last minute after many spent thousands of dollars to come.

I agree also. Bloomie made it a point to continue to say that the race would go on. Other than Fox, the media played along with the game, minimizing the negative effects of Sandy (presumably to help "The One"). Then, after spending a boatload of money flying into NY and paying for thier rooms (not to mention having already paid the significant entrance fee for the marathon), Bloomie cancelled the bloomin' Marathon.

He should have cancelled it right away, not waited until thousands of people had converged on the city. And while thier travesty pales in comparison to what many are going through, they were hoodwinked by Bloomberg and it costed them needless money and time.

As for the runners, I'd be PO'ed if I had made the trip. It isn't like that money grows on trees. But if I'd already committed to staying in the city, I'd join the hundreds of runners that DID go into the heavily-damaged areas to provide help. You probably won't see that on the evening news because to show that would be to show more damage and "Katrina-like" circumstances that Obambi promised wouldn't happen.

Bloomberg’s an idiot because in keeping the vent until the 11th hour then runners came to NYC from all over the world and now have nothing to do. As such they are taking up resources and wasting time in the area. Failure.

I never understood the point of running just for the purpose of running.

The human body was engineered for walking long distances while carrying a weapon. Running is what someone has to do if they forget their weapon.

If they got paid, they likely did get robbed. By the NYC income tax.

I totally agree, who deliberately flies to a devastated city? What idiots. What about using your common sense and saying “I don’t think the city needs the extra hassle, and I sure don’t. I think I’ll stay home.”

Thanks for sharing that. I have been waiting for those kind of stories to appear, but then why am I not surprised? Volunteers and do-gooders take the limelight away from government initiatives, and politicians with an agenda. Libs hate grassroots movements.

On Friday, my niece flew from Atlanta to NYC for the race. She had trained all year and got her registration by lottery. When she got on the plane, the race was on. When she got off the plane, she found out that Hizzonor had cancelled it. So she swapped her return ticket to Atlanta for a ticket to Savannah, where she ran in that city’s marathon on Saturday. Bloomberg should be drawn and quartered.

He should be drawn and quartered because he is an uncaring fool. But your niece was a dope for flying up to a devastated city, sorry. I have a neighbor who flew to China to run on the great wall in some dopey race. I agree with the others who say these “runners” are self centered narcissists. They are. It’s all about how the run makes them feel and their perception that they are so freaking cool because they run. Big deal, they over exercise and wear out their knees before they are 40, great. Yeah, that’s real freaking cool.
