"German Islamists Target Youth on the Internet" By Christoph Sydow 11/01/2012
"Translated from the German by Christopher Sultan."
PHOTO CAPTION: "A growing community of German-speaking Islamists has developed on the Internet. Aiming to find new recruits, they glorify jihad and call for attacks on Germany. A new study warns that such online propaganda might foster a new generation of terrorists."
SNIPPET: "International terrorist groups like al-Qaida recognized the importance of the Internet for recruiting new supporters early on."
SNIPPET: "Intelligence services can also take advantage of the anonymity of Internet forums to deliberately plant false information or obtain insider information."

“Salafist preacher and Internet activist indicted in Germany”
September 13, 2011
SNIPPET: “Ibrahim Abou-Nagie, a salafi/jihadi preacher very active online, has been indicted in Cologne, Germany. Abou-Nagie, together with Abu Dujana of Bonn, operate as Die Wahre Religion (The True Religion). They are cited in multiple cases including those of the now-deceased Bekkay Harrach, and more recently Robert M. (arrested with an associate attempting to enter Britain whilst in possession of jihadist materials including Inspire magazine), not to mention Arid Uka, the Frankfurt shooter:”

SNIPPET: Looking away, not caring, or hoping for the best are not viable options in fighting terrorism (in general) and the global jihad (specifically). Terrorism must be fought head on 24/7 and preventing terrorism is far better than just reacting to one terror-related event after another. -Cindy (July 1, 2011)

Jihadis Online: A Few Thoughts

SNIPPET: I. When considering the matter of jihadis online, remember that most of what we think we know is based on analyses of the comments made by an handful of vocal activists. The vast majority of jihadis online, be they on forums or social networking sites[i], say nothing. Skillful translations and insightful analyses by definition tell us little about this potentially lethal yet silent majority.

Al-Qaidas online forums go dark

SNIPPET: WASHINGTON, April 2 (UPI) A blackout of al-Qaidas main Web sites is in its 11th day, and officials think the forums may have been brought down in a cyberattack.
While no one has claimed credit for disabling the sites...
SNIPPET: The loss of information typically confuses and frustrates the readers of the Web sites.
It leaves the rank-and-file to guess which messages and which messengers are genuine al-Qaida, and provides undercover operators with new opportunities to disrupt the movement, said A. Aaron Weisburd, senior fellow at the Homeland Security Policy Institute.

Social Networks & The Online Jihad
World Threats.com ^ | October 26, 2011 | Posted by Candice Lanier

SNIPPET: In July, the British government warned that Al Qaedas exploitation of social networking websites is on the rise.
SNIPPET: The massive and multifarious network of websites and social media has presented a challenge to authorities in trying to combat it. Additionally, civil liberty concerns have conflicted with government efforts to spy on communications.
Reducing terrorist activity on social media sites has been particularly difficult because users have adopted new forms of communication to conform with the new formats. Many Arabic speakers on Facebook, Twitter, MySpace and other sites use Arabizi, a form of colloquial Arabic written in the Latin alphabet and numbers. This allows the use of a standard English-language keyboard for typing messages. There exists, however, no standard version of Arabizi. It varies from country to country, even among groups within countries and is affected by differences in dialect.

They have zero deniability (they couldnt have accidentally wandered into the site), and they had to make the effort to join (an expression of intent).
While the goal here is to present a range of sites, the fact is that the jihadis themselves have largely coalesced at Shmukh and Ansar Arabic.

Theres nothing worse than the mournful wailing of analysts, graduate students, and reporters who find themselves locked out of their favorite forum. Join early, join often, save important discussions as you find them, try not to say anything too embarrassing, and if youre a civilian, make some effort to let your friendly neighborhood secret police know that youre a good guy, not a bad guy, so they dont have to waste time and money investigating you. Forums are not just websites, they are battlefields, and spectators are not particularly welcome by any of the combatants.

Two individualsone a United States citizen who allegedly provided support to a foreign terrorist organization, the other wanted for his alleged role in the overseas kidnapping of an Americanhave been added to the FBIs Most Wanted Terrorists list.
A third man wanted for questioning in connection with providing material support to terrorists has been added to our Seeking InformationTerrorism list.
Podcast: Most Wanted Terrorists
Most Wanted Terrorists
Omar Shafik Hammami, formerly from Alabama, has reportedly been a senior leader in al Shabaab, an insurgency group in Somalia. Al Shabaab was designated a foreign terrorist organization by the U.S. State Department in 2008; it has since repeatedly threatened terrorist actions against America and American interests. Hammami allegedly traveled to Somalia in 2006 and joined al Shabaabs military wing, eventually becoming a leader in the organization. Hammamiwho has been indicted in the U.S. on various terrorism chargesis believed to be in Somalia.
Raddulan Sahiron, a native of the Philippines, is wanted for his alleged involvement in the 1993 kidnapping of an American in the Philippines by the Abu Sayyaf Group, designated a foreign terrorist organization in 1997. Sahiron, believed to be the leader of the Abu Sayyaf Group, was indicted on federal hostage-taking charges and may currently be in the area of Patikul Jolo, Sulu, Philippines.
Poster: Shaykh Aminullah
Seeking InformationTerrorism
Shaykh Aminullah is wanted for questioning in connection with providing material support to terrorists with the aid of Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Tayyiba (designated a foreign terrorist organization in 2001). Among other activities, Aminullah allegedly provided assistance, including funding and recruits, to the Al Qaeda network; provided funding and other resources, including explosive vests, to the Taliban; and facilitated the activities of anti-coalition militants operating in Afghanistan by raising money in support of terrorist activities. He is believed to be in the Ganj District of Peshawar, Pakistan.
The FBIs Most Wanted Terrorists List was created in October 2001. We subsequently created the Seeking InformationTerrorism list to publicize our efforts to locate terrorism suspects not yet indicted in the U.S.
In addition to the beneficial aspect of worldwide publicity, individuals named to the Most Wanted Terrorists list must:
Have threatened the security of U.S. nationals or U.S. national security;
Be considered a dangerous menace to society;
Have indicated a willingness to commit or indicate to commit an act to cause death or serious bodily injury; prepare or plan terrorist activity; gather information on potential targets for terrorist activity; or solicit funds or other things of value for terrorist activity;
Have provided material support such as currency or financial services or assistance to a terrorist organization but do not necessarily have to belong to that organization;
Be subject to lawful detention, either by the U.S. government based on an active federal warrant for a serious felony offense or by any other lawful authority; and
Be the subject of a pending FBI investigation.
Individuals on the Seeking InformationTerrorism list are being sought for questioning in connection with terrorist threats against the U.S. Unlike those on the Most Wanted Terrorists list, these individuals have not been indicted by the U.S. government.
If you have information about any of these men, please submit a tip or contact the nearest FBI office abroad or in the U.S.
