President Barack Obama has seen a once-steady lead in Michigan decline to just 2 points in a recent poll, and Michigan has been thrown into "toss-up" status in the election's final week.
The poll, from The Detroit News, finds Obama leading Republican rival Mitt Romney, 47.7 percent to 45 percent. That's the second poll in a week that has shown an increasingly tight race in the state, including a Foster McCollum White Baydoun poll that showed the race virtually tied. And it comes as a pro-Romney super PAC, American Crossroads, includes Michigan in its $50 million, final-week ad buy.
Intriguingly, when comparing the Michigan poll to a new poll of Ohio released today, it shows that the race in Michigan is actually closer.
The key points in the new poll:
* What's pushing Romney to a virtual statistical tie in the state is his clear advantage on trust in handling the economy. He leads the president, 47-44, on the crucial issue, even in a state dominated by the auto industry.
* Compared with September, men have shifted 5 points more toward Romney.
* What's keeping Obama afloat: His advantage in connecting with voters who think he "understands their values." Forty-eight percent identified with Obama on that question, compared with just 43 percent for Romney.
* Obama also has a significant, 8-point advantage on handling foreign affairs.

You have no idea how angry the people of Michigan are at the public sector unions at this point. They’re fighting between public and private sector unions and fighting within factions inside both. For that matter I have plenty of union member neighbors who are staunch conservatives just like I was when I was a member.
It’s looking very good for our side. One third of union households are voting against it.

Obamas numbers ARE NOT IN COLLAPSE.
Its just that the polling outfits are forced to dump their fictitious numbers, and report the real numbers, in the week before the election.
But it is fun telling Obamatrons, who don’t know the truth about polling outfits fudging numbers until the last week, that Obama is in collapse. I like watching libs’ heads explode. Psy-Ops , you know.
According to the poll:
PROPOSAL 1 HAS CHANCE OF PASSAGE; SUPPORT FOR PROPOSAS 2-6 COLLAPSES
There’s a large number of Lebanese Christians, who have been in Michigan since the early 1900’s as well. Spence Abraham was one of the more well known.
If my exhuberance is irrational then fine but please excuse my wishing it could be so.
No way this is true. If it was, the entire Dem party would be campaigning in Michigan now. So would Romney. This is just fluff. Don’t listen to what the pollsters say or the surrogates for the candidates, instead watch where they go this last few days. Romney in FL is worrisome isn’t it?
Yep. Detroit has a huge Arab population but the majority of them are Christians (Iraqi Chaldeans mostly)
I suspect Prop 2 will bring out the union vote and skew things to Obama. I hope that the anti Prop 2 forces are strong enough to defeat both Prop 2 and Obama!
He’s a scumbag but Matty Maroun is a Lebanese Christian.
“I find it comical that the Dems are deriding Romneys foray into democrat strongholds as an act of desperation,
It is especially comical after the Dems have claimed for years that Republicans don’t chase the dem voters because we are racists and homophobes. Now that Romney and team are making inroads, then it is called desparation.
Wayne county doesn’t have the pull it once had, an influx of eastern europeans who can spot communism a mile away, and an electorate tired of living in their second lost decade, have about had enough. Maybe Michigan can regain its title of industrial powerhouse, hopefully.
Michigan is about 1% Muslim. 1%. This isn't Paris, Malmo, or Rotterdam. This writer equates Middle Easterner with Arab (not necessarily true) and with Muslim (even less true), and that's her mistake.
Hamtramck is probably now the Muslim capital of Michigan. Mostly Albanian and Pakistani/Bangledeshi along with some blacks (mostly Protestant). A large number of the Poles have emptied out. It's got about 22,000 people left.
Dearborn, a mid-size city of under 100,000, is still majority white ethnic. Polish/Italian/Irish. It is about 1/3 to 40% Middle Eastern, and that includes Middle Eastern Christians which are by far the majority in Michigan.
Thank you for that link. The results for the Proposals are mostly encouraging. I needed that....
I worked in Detroit for two years shortly after 9/11/01, with engineers from all over the middle east, including Iraqi Christians, Maronites, Indians, Africans, and a lot of moslems. I got the clear impression that a lot of Arabs and other middle easterners, REALLY do not like blacks. After one particular meeting, a Nigerian left the room and the two engineers (Indian and Iraqi) were merciless in their comments.
Moslem/Arab may not equal pro-Obama.
