The security officer had a laser on the target that was firing and repeatedly requested back-up support from a Specter gunship, which is commonly used by U.S. Special Operations forces to provide support to Special Operations teams on the ground involved in intense firefights. The fighting at the CIA annex went on for more than four hours — enough time for any planes based in Sigonella Air base, just 480 miles away, to arrive. Actually the AC-130 is pretty precise. AC-130As (or maybe they were “H”s) were tasked to support the failed Iranian Hostage Rescue mission, where they were supposed to provide “crowd pushback” as the Delta operators effected the rescue.
The U-boat (AC-130U) is at least three and maybe four generations more advanced than those earlier gunships were. 105mm and 40mm guns are very precise, especially when pointed downward as direct fire weapons.
I believe they’re referring to using the Gunship to attack the sources of indirect fires that were targeting the compound. Those positions had apparently been lazed at the time, and could have been struck with precision using a number of various assets.
