Are utility companies prepared for another northeaster? They better be, Gov. Deval Patrick warns

With a potential monster storm menacing the East Coast for Halloween week, Gov. Deval L. Patrick has given utility companies a Friday deadline to submit plans for dealing with the brewing storm, which some forecasters say could be a devastating sequel to last year's October storm.

Early predictions indicate Hurricane Sandy, currently headed toward Florida's coast, might combine with two separate cold fronts – one from the North, the other from the West – to become a super storm capable of producing snow, gale-force winds and flooding.

Patrick spoke firmly during a Thursday morning radio appearance on WTKK-FM, issuing a stern warning to the state's utility companies as the storm system is predicted to head up the East Coast toward Massachusetts – potentially arriving on the one-year anniversary of the Oct. 29, 2011, snowstorm that caused widespread power outages and billions in damage.

Asked on the radio program if the utilities will be ready, Patrick responded "They'd better be."

National Grid and Western Massachusetts Electric Company, the two major utility companies that serve this region, both came under fire for their handling of last year's storm. Both companies say they're in a better position to manage their response to the pending storm.

Nice utility you have there, be a shame if something were to happen to it.

It would probably be a lot easier for them to prepare for these storms, if the state would tell the environmentalists to go pound sand whey they want to trim trees. Either that or let them work on a cu-de-sac without a off duty cop to control traffic.

Well Hell, Mr. Governor, why don’t you and the gang of thieves you’ve surrounded yourself with just come right on down here and show us how to run an electrical generation and distribution system? I’m sure a bunch of deep thinkers like you and your cronies will have no trouble showing us how it’s done.

National Grid does not do good maintenance. Many of their power pools are leaning at 30 degree angles. Even ones loaded with transformers. They don’t fix or replace them until they Fall.

If it’s anything like Gov. Malloy of CT did last year, he will hold press conferences daily, demand they fix multiple transmission lines, substations and thousands of down poles/lines overnight. Whey that doesn’t happen he will then hold another press conference and tell them they are not prepared, lazy etc. then, throw someone from the PowerCo on stage.

After the 2008 ice storm they came through our town and took out all the bad trees near the power lines. Haven’t lost power since.

Yeah, a hundred thousand trees go Dow, taking telephone poles with them. And Deval thinks the utilities should be prepared for that.

Clearly his accountants think its ok to have inventory matching his entire plant, AND extra staff to put it all back up in 24 hours.

He is such a tool.

Utilities to the governor:

"We are in the business of providing utility service, we will not take time out of what we are doing to respond to your request for an explanation of or justification for what we do".

Not sure if he would be literally that stupid. But one never knows how the goons in the administration will react to anything at this point. They see the writing on the wall.

Agreed that his statements are not helpful. Here near DC the power companies are already preparing for the storm, which is currently forecast to send it’s main fury north of us. We have still not cleaned up all of the damage from that storm June 29 of this year, although all of the power lines have been repaired.

Note for anyone who loses power, if they need to replace poles, expect to be without power for three days.

What an insidious fool. This storm reminded me for some reason of the first Connections show. The entire episode is on YouTube. The normalcy bias sometimes leads to rot from the bottom up. People need to learn that no politician is going to save them. Until they do, we will be electing people with the name of Deval.

And WHAT, exactly, has this overbearing, arrogant, munchkin Gov. Deval Patrick done to help? Zero, zip, nada. This inbred perfumed prince issues dictates to his subjects and has absolutely no clue how to lead. He couldn't lead a bunch of randy Donkey politicians through a Chinese cat house with a wad of $100 bills and a wallet full of plastic.
