Mark Halperin (Time): Romney Did Himself More Good Than Obama
Breitbart.com ^ | 22 Oct 2012 | JOHN NOLTE

Posted on 10/22/2012 11:50:13 PM PDT by Qbert

Time's Mark Halperin is The Narrative and he's scoring the debate a tie -- giving both men a B+.

But it's what Halperin writes  that should worry Obama fans.

Obama:

Tried all evening to tease out for America the patent contradictions he sees starkly in Romney’s past statements, but could not cast them in sharp enough relief to break through for the non-expert viewer. Efforts to make Romney seem unpresidential and unprepared failed to rattle his opponent, but did produce a series of rhetorical moments that will get television replays. Still haunted by his Denver failure, he stayed hyped up throughout, pleasing his base. Significantly stronger on points, but less likely than his rival to have his performance impact the outcome of the race.

Romney:

Achieved his ongoing goal of appearing to be an acceptable alternative for American voters. Was determined not to let the President bait him into the sort of titanic clash that characterized the previous debate — and/but didn’t ruffle when challenged...[Snip] If his task was to remain calm and present himself to the electorate as a reasonable, peace-seeking, credible, centrist, sure-handed commander-in-chief, he seemed to clear the bar for at least some undecideds...

Geeez, thats gonna smart.. You have to wonder what the real internals are.. I have been watching the talking heads on MSNBC, no surprises as we would expect, but I was watching the body language.. Can’t tell with them, they are always so wacko..

Halpren will get some heat on Morning Joe tomorrow, he clearly doesn’t care this isn’t the first time he stepped on their heads.. LOL

This is what I have been saying. Romney was playing to what’s left of the undecideds & women in this debate tonight. It was a “do no harm” debate for Mitt & his team. They passed that test. They know American’s don’t care about foreign affairs & that this debate will be forgotten in 2 days.

"Geeez, thats gonna smart."

Rick Klein at ABC was saying much the same thing, btw: "Mitt Romney Keeps Command Amid Attacks – and Looks to Future".

Thanks be to our GREAT God and Saviour that Romney showed himself to be presidential, courteous, respectful, intelligent and a lover of America.

I only saw parts of the debate during lulls in the NLCS game, plus highlights after. But it seems that Romney wanted to keep things “big”, and let Obama go “small”, and it worked. Romney painted a broad indictment of Obama’s weak foreign policy, from his “apology tour”, to the resurgence of Al Qaeda, to Egypt, Libya, Syria, China, Russia, Iran, Pakistan, cuts in the military, trade, etc. Rather than get lost in the weeds of details, something Obama would have loved to do. Obama was reduced to saying things like “the problem is you said X two years ago, and you are saying Y now”. But nothing Romney has said has had any effect in the real world; Obama’s policies have. Obama couldn’t really defend his record, so he lost.

WHen he did go into detail, Romney avoided spouting a bunch of statistics. For example, asked if he wouldn’t be starting a trade war with China on day one, he used his hands and said China sells this much to us, and buys this much from us, so the last thing they want is a trade war. That was very effective, IMHO.

Good observation.

Obama/Biden signs say “Forward”. Romney, in the final weeks should say that Obama /Biden signs have to say “Forward” since for the past four years Obama / Biden have brought the country backwards.

He is the very one, the very one who saw Obama’s junior high behavior for what it was.

Since 1964 Left is always trying to 'Goldwater' Republicans (remember the LBJ commerical showing a little girl before a atomic bomb goes off).

That was the goal of Carter vs Reagan and that was the goal of Obama tonight.

It failed, Romney appears to have stayed calm and focused, giving no reason for Americans NOT to vote for him, which is the only thing Obama could hope for.

Obama must know that Virgina is going GOP since he had no qualms going after the size of the Navy.

The fact is that the Navy is too small for it's global commitments and ships and personal are being overstretched, leading many to leave the Navy.

“hand wringing trolls”——Very nice turn of phrase. I like it...very descriptive and precise——and, most definitely, right on.

Who won the debate and who was helped by the debate are two different questions. When I was in college, I was sometimes a debate judge. Not infrequently, I would give the win to a team that didn't persuade me at all, because much scoring is based on style, and because every judge winds up factoring in the difficulty of the promoting or defending the topic in question. That means I gave a big win to Chris Cooms, the infamous bearded Marxist from Delaware when he was at Amherst, because he was a gifted debater. Even when my two-man team beat Cooms and his partner, playing the role of spoiler in the tournament, it was my liberal partner who scored highest. I only held my own against Amherst's very able #2 man (a very short man who was a very good debater. Amherst had a very good team. At least three top tier debaters).

Yes the debate thread last night had the same few that come every debate thread and scream in caps that Romney is losing. I did notice these same posters are never in many other news threads and also were very silent during the first debate.

As Charles Krauthammer said last night, Obama went "shockingly small" in his approach to the debate.

I think it is a symptom of his narcissism - he views his foreign policy as an extension of himself (surprise!) and when it was brought into question, Obama reacted personally.

Obama’s vain attempt at humor failed when he peevishly informed Romney that the military no longer has horses or bayonets. The Marlines still have bayonets and our soldiers use horses in Afghanistan because many areas don’t have roads. And the voters in Newport News certainly know that we still need ships.

We didn’t watch much of this debate but what I did see was a little man with a churlish attitude that is not fit to be President of the United States.

Romney proved he's a masterful politician by doing this.

He knows that the reasons NOT to vote for Obama are many and compelling.

All he has to do is limit the reasons NOT to vote for Romney, and he wins.

I'm fairly confident at this point that he will win the actual vote-count, but, as always, the final question is, does he win by enough to overwhelm the voter-fraud?
