It had been thought that Mr Mollier was killed because he witnessed the shootings as he cycled past.
But Lt Colonel Benedict Vinnemann, who is leading the gendarme inquiry, revealed he was considering other possibilities.
He said: Was the al-Hilli family the main target? Was it not the cyclist? Only ongoing work on the scene can answer this question clearly.
Were talking about someone whom everybody says was a gentleman, but whos to say he did not lead a double life?
Mr Mollier worked for Cezus, a subsidiary of the Areva Group, specialising in zirconium metalworking for nuclear fuel containers.
Cezus is owned by the Areva group which in 2007 was forced to deny a report in Der Spiegel that it had flouted UN sanctions by providing Iran with enriched uranium.
He lived in Ugine, close to the isolated beauty spot on the edge of the village of Chevaline where the shootings took place

They were all the targets, i suggest, this guy was buying secrets from the other and they were lets say “negotiations ended”. Bit of a coincidence all these industry connected people in one place at the same time.......no such thing as coincidence.
Certainly not when you've got a bunch of dead bodies.
I know this is a tragedy, but I still cannot help envisioning Lt Colonel Benedict Vinnemann, as Sheef Anspecteur Cleazou of zee Suritay. “Were talking about someone [M. Mollier] whom everybody says was a gentleman, but whos to say he did not lead a double life?”
Why not just come out and say eet, “Suspect no one, I suspect everyone.”
I think the most relevant issue is the surviving “badly beaten” 7 year old girl.
If you are eliminating witnesses and you have just shot three adults, it doesn’t sound logical that you would take the time to try to beat a 7 year old girl to death. Unless, of course, you get off on that kind of thing.
While poorly written, it also sounds like the beaten girl was found in the car. Nobody sets out to do a beating in a car. Too cramped. It sounds more like the beating took place outside the car, for whatever reason, and then the family was forced into the car and shot.
Nut-job Conspiracy Theory Ping!
To get onto The Nut-job Conspiracy Theory Ping List you must threaten to report me to the Mods if I dont add you to the list...
Another article says the girl was pistol whipped and shot in the shoulder and that the four year old escaped by being hidden under her mother’s skirts. “Badly beaten” may be journalistic hyperbole.
It just gets weirder and weirder
Either way, it sounds like she was being use as a lever against the father.
Agreed. Too many linked people for it to be a coincidence.
I was suspicious of that same thing as well, so started looking for other articles. One stated she had a fractured skull from a suspected pistol whipping (and also shot).
So I’m thinking that when her family was shot, she tried to climb out of the vehicle and was struck in the head with the gun butt by the shooter (pistol whipped) to keep her in the car and then shot.
I am assuming the shooter thought she was dead and perhaps they knew more cyclists were coming along shortly so they left without discovering the 4 year old under her mother’s skirt or robe.
The real question is whether the nuclear industry guy was there to meet the father of the family and was also an intentional target or just an unlucky passerby.
The whole thing is very hinky.
Your suggestion is quite possible, but I wonder if the shooter did not want to kill the children. It had all the marks of a professional assasination - all the shots found a target - that takes training.
It may be that he/she did not overlook the other child, but thought her too young to be a significant witness - a four year old can’t describe well - and the 7 year old was more of a threat, but was knocked unconscious to put her out of the picture. After being k.o.ed, most of us lose memory of the whole event.
I agree that the rhetorical questions sound rather funny. I think it is a “lost in translation” issue. French is a more formal language.
But details of a new ballistics report leaked to Le Parisien newspaper on Friday suggest that French cyclist Sylvain Mollier, a 45-year-old nuclear industry worker, was the primary target.
He was hit by the first stream of bullets before the frenzied gunman turned his attention on Mr Al-Hilli, who had parked the family BMW in a layby close to the village of Chevaline.
Eric Maillaud, the prosecutor in nearby Annecy who is leading the investigation, confirmed that Mr Al-Hilli had got out of the car with Zainab, while denying that any conclusions had been drawn from the ballistics report. ...
Sand and gravel was, for example, found on the soles of Mr Al Hillis shoes - proving that he had been outside the car.
He then got back into the drivers seat, locked the doors, and tried to get away - but in his panic put the BMW into reverse and became stuck in a muddy bank.
This allowed the gunman to fire bullets into the heads of all the seated adults, before returning to finish Mr Mollier off.

Thanks.
I am unclear how they are able to deduce who was shot first.
The “nuclear industry guy” appears to have been a welder. Not someone likely to have access to a lot of nuclear secrets.
A welder specializing in nuclear fuel containers may very well have information regarding the layout of storage areas and the security in places he has worked.
It’s more than just a rhetorical question, it’s speculation that casts aspersions on the character of a person who is unable to defend himself.
