Protesting Serrano's "P*** Christ" blasphemy in Manhattan

Members of the American TFP and America Needs Fatima prayed the Rosary and offered public reparation and protest against the “P*** Christ” blasphemy by Andres Serrano in front of the Edward Tyler Nahem Art Gallery on 57th Street in New York City on September 27.

Serrano blasphemy protest

The offensive exhibit shows a crucifix immersed inside a jar of urine. “It’s not art, but blasphemy,” said TFP Student Action Director John Ritchie. “It’s a symptom of out culture’s spiritual rot and it's shameful that world leaders issue verbose statements in defense of Muhammad, while remaining silent about this crude insult against the Sacred Person of Our Lord Jesus Christ. In fact, the offensive piece received $15,000 from the National Endowment of the Arts, which includes tax payer dollars. How is that for a double standard?”

Although the protest could not have been more visible and vocal, the Huffington Post claimed that “no one from the right [was] in sight.”

Because of the scaffolding on the sidewalk of the gallery, some of the protesters stood across the street while others placed themselves directly in front of the establishment in peaceful protest, displaying signs, banners and praying the rosary. The signage proclaimed a common conviction among those present: Catholics must console Our Lord for such a terrible insult and make reparation.

“Why is the Catholic Church always singled out for attack?” asked a police officer who monitored the protest. “It’s outrageous,” he said. Similarly, most of the passersby were sympathetic with the protest and disgusted by the “artwork.”

May the Blessed Virgin Mary hear our prayers and listen to our acts of reparation and intercede with Her Divine Son to bring an end to the terrible wave of blasphemies that afflict America.

Ever notice how the liberal pundits have no ability to appreciate art in any form, but they lavish wild praise on anything that promotes their agenda and call it “great art” ?
It’s not about esthetics. It’s about ideology.

Hey I just wanted to let you know the artist’s statement on this piece. It blew my mind when I heard it...

The artist bought that plastic crucifix cheap somewhere and was stunned at the commercialization of Christianity. He didn’t like the idea that people were making lots of money off of other people’s faith.

The artwork was an attempt to show his disgust, not with Christianity but with commercialization of faith.

Serrano’s piece would probably have been largely ignored, except that the artist succeeded in eliciting outrage. The protests are literally free advertising, and I’m sure the artist thanks you!

I’m catholic, and not only am I not offended, I could care less how someone portrays a religious figure in any religion.

It doesn’t diminish my own beliefs in any way.

per Wikipedia:

“Serrano has not ascribed overtly political content to Piss Christ and related artworks, on the contrary stressing their ambiguity. He has also said that while this work is not intended to denounce religion, it alludes to a perceived commercializing or cheapening of Christian icons in contemporary culture”

With expressionism you often need to read the artist’s statement to fully understand the purpose. I am myself a Christian and was SHOCKED when I saw it. I am sure that was the purpose but Serrano had a goal that was different from blasphemy.

I’ve always found this piece of “art” incredibly distasteful, and I’m not even a Christian! Setting aside the question of blasphemy, it’s simply vulgar.

...”In fact, the offensive piece received $15,000 from the National Endowment of the Arts, which includes tax payer dollars.”...

In addition to blasphemy, I contend this misuse of tax payer funds is also treasonous - The Constitution of the United States(Article III, Section 3) ...adhering to their enemies, giving them ‘AID AND COMFORT’...

Our Founders would see Serrano and the people who view this atrocity as ‘art’ as enemies to the Republic ~ and would be shocked and saddened by the fact that decent Americans subsidized this garbage!

Not my fight, but I would respectfully use the approach the mainstream media uses to kill things -— pretend this guy and his “art” doesn’t exist.

Don’t protest him.
Don’t mention him.
Dont’ critizize him.

Just ignore him, and quietly make sure he gets no money.

Very, very quietly.

But for right-wing protests, this guy would have disappeared long ago.
