So why does the federal government subsidize milk anyway?

Just get Bloomerburg to declare milk a fattening and unhealthy food and ban its sale or use, problem solved........

Wasn’t it just a few years ago that the govenment was buying and dumping milk by the thousands of gallons to keep prices from plunging in a surplus?

Um...100-plus years ago farmers were a strong voting bloc? Oh, and Iowa kicks off primary season. Also, the MSM likes to show sad people in overalls and amber waves of grain.

So, Chucky...what are you gonna do about the price of corn, corn meal, corn oil and all the other foodstuffs created there from during this ‘drought’ while simultaneously diverting FOOD RESOURCES to the production of ethanol that destroys gaskets, seals, oxygen sensors, and who knows what else...wassamatter, no corn grown in NY? You bastard.

But Dems do not use fear and threats to get laws passed. Only Republicans do that.

Front page of Yahoo right now
California milk producers going out of business because of low prices.

Happy to get government involved because they always do SUCH a good job fiddling with the market.

California has had its own milk pricing system for dairy since the 1930’s, separate from that operated by the federal government in other states. The California Department of Food and Agriculture sets minimum prices that must be paid to farmers in the state for five classes of milk.

In recent years, California’s prices tended to be lower than in other states. In 2011 and 2012, California’s price for milk used to make cheese was frequently $2 or more lower per hundredweight of milk than in the rest of the nation.

Without renewal of the Farm Bill, Schumer said the country would revert to a 1940s era agriculture policy.....

. . . also known as 'FDR Agriculture policy'.

About 9-10 years ago Ole Chuckie was touring the Eick dairy farm in Medina NY. He was trying to drum up support for the Upstate milk co-operative. About half way through the tour of the farm he asked Mr. Eick how many time a week the cows needed to be milked. Mr. Eick stopped looked at him and said "Mr. Schumer I have never voted for a Republican in my life, but after hearing this stupid question I promise I will be voting for your opponent in the primary and in the general election no matter who it is, and the same is true of every member of my family. Now get off my farm." He turned and walked away just shaking his head.

For those of you not in the know about dairy cows, they need to be milked at least once and sometimes twice a day.

A gallon of milk could surpass $6

Well, Chuckie ... here's how it works. If six dollars is the true cost of a gallon of milk, then demand will go down and everything will work out just fine without the geniuses in Washington sticking their noses into it.

If milk prices DO happen go up in the absence of a new Federal farm bill, the higher prices will be temporary, as those same price increases become the market signal to other farmers that they can produce and deliver milk for less.

The truth is that the majority, the vast majority of what the nation’s farms produce have NOTHING, NOTHING AT ALL in “assistance” from the Federal government’s farm programs.

The other truth is that the vast majority of all direct assistance and subsidies from the farm bill go to a minorty of farms at the top of the farm revenue heap.

The farm bill has not been an economic necessity for the nation’s farm economy for decades. It is 100% about industry cartels, crony capitalism, political donations from the subsidized segment of American farmers and wholesale transfers from all taxpayers to a minority of the nation’s farms - a pampered minority.

What began as a depression era aid to America’s farms is a program whose purpose has been over taken by time, and it is time the entire program died. Keeping it alive will have NOTHING to do with keeping a vibrant American farm economy - it’s no more than keeping a corpse on life support.

Kill the EPA, repeal Obama’s executive orders, drill for oil and build the Keystone pipeline and food prices will drop significantly.

but it won' stop prices rising since California dairy farms going broke due to feed prices, so in California the nation’s largest dairy state, dozens of dairy farms large and small have filed for bankruptcy in recent months with many on the verge of insolvency while others have sold their herds or sent them to slaughter...

Only the price of government should skyrocket.

And health care.

And energy.

And gasoline.

And Schumer.
