Armed militants have attacked a prison in the Iraqi city of Tikrit, killing at least 12 guards and freeing about 90 inmates, officials have told the BBC.
They say a suicide bomber detonated a car bomb at the gates of Tasfirat prison and clashes between militants and security guards followed.
Some of the escaped inmates were reportedly al-Qaeda members.
The prison was later retaken from the gunmen by security forces, reports say. A curfew is now in place in the area.

We lost Iraq the very moment it turned into a nation building project. The Islamic culture doesn't allow freedom and rights. As well freedom and rights must be earned just as our freedoms and rights were won. There has to be something there to build on. It's not there in that culture as a whole.
Things will not improve in Iraq and we will have once again created a far bigger threat than the one that existed. Our best policy should have been to have gotten Iraq and Iran back to fighting each other and stayed the heck out of it.

We were supposed to leave some combat troops in Iraq, but the Dear Reader pulled them all out on a whim. I doubt he cares if Iraq turns into a disaster, but we expended a lot of blood and treasure there.
Wilsonian morons like Carter, and the Bushes, thought that our enemies fought by the Marquis of Queensbury rules, and that if we bared our throats or those of our allies, the enemy would be nice. They never tried to set up regimes that would be loyally proAmerican. And we have been paying the price ever since.
Our responses when given to enemies should be like that of Bambino in the Trinity westerns. They hit us once and we knock them into another dimension of existence oblivious to the world around them LOL. Seriously there is no nice in war.
Today, 6 years ago 2 soldiers in my son’s platoon were killed in Al Anbar in Iraq. They gave their lives to establish a footprint of freedom and remove a dictator. Obama actively worked to sabotage their mission and has inflamed the Middle East with his apologetic approach to foreign policy. The media will try to reelect him. We should be impeaching him. The memory of all those sacrifices is being desecrated before our eyes.
