Written off by many in his own party a mere month ago, Republican Rep. Todd Akin has been slowly rebuilding his Senate campaign after apologizing for inflammatory remarks about pregnancy and rape.
Now Akin is approaching a critical week that could determine whether his re-emerging campaign can gain enough momentum to put Missouri back in the battleground column as Republicans attempt to win control of the Senate from Democrats.
Tuesday is the deadline for Akin to get a court order to drop his challenge of Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill. But Akin says he won't do so. Instead, Akin plans to ramp up his campaign. He's holding a fundraiser Monday with former Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich. He's addressing a potentially influential group of pastors Tuesday morning. Then as the drop-out clock ticks down, he's kicking off a statewide bus tour for his Senate bid that will include venerable conservative activist Phyllis Schlafly.
"I believe the state of the campaign is looking better and better," Akin said Friday after engaging McCaskill in their first debate and then rallying on the Missouri Capitol lawn with supporters of a newly formed women-for-Akin coalition.
Akin has apologized repeatedly since a TV interview aired Aug. 19 in which he suggested that women's bodies have a natural defense against pregnancy in cases of "legitimate rape." He has repeatedly rejected calls of top national Republicans including presidential candidate Mitt Romney to quit the race so the state GOP committee can appoint a replacement candidate. Yet some have doubted Akin's resolve.
"There are a lot of donors who have sat on the sidelines and are waiting" for Tuesday's drop-out deadline to pass, said Rick Tyler, a former Gingrich aide who joined Akin's campaign as part of the re-building effort. "We are tilling that hard soil

Are there still people describing themselves as “conservatives” still pushing Akin to drop out?
Why drop out when you have to foot the bill for getting out...might as well campaign
Maybe he could get “Rape rape” Whoppi Goldberg, or “put some ice on it” BIlly Jeff to explain the many various nuances of the definition of the word rape.
Oh gee, abc, are you afraid someone might have forgotten Akin’s remarks? Is that water getting too heavy for ya?
Akin did well in the first debate with McCaskill.
The polls must show Akin closing in and ABC thinks they had better revisit this campaign and help the dimoKKKRAT out.
Meanwhile Bill Clinton may have actually committed rape and not a word was said by the "defenders of women."
Actions speak louder than words. Akin said dumb things, Claire Baby does dumb things.
I’ll take the former.
I don't think there are. It's too late. But I do think the Left is trying to push the idea that it still might happen to get conservatives to delay supporting Akin. They are worried that despite the fact that Akin came out with comment, the major news of the day for about a week was Akin getting TRASHED by BOTH SIDES and McCaskill still couldn't break 50%. What conditions would she need to get a majority vote if events of about a month ago weren't enough?
I sent him a small contribution to make up for what I said about him!!!
Lib media doing their best to keep Akin in, knowing deadline is Tuesday. Once Tuesday hits, the ads are going to come down hard. Up until now, Akin has not been touched by DNC/PAC ads.
Further proof the GOPe views conservatives, not the rats, as their enemy.
This would probably make a pretty good ad .... not that Akin can afford to pay for anything since Priebus has pulled the plug on the $$ like an idiot.

Good point....if Claire McCaskill cannot get to 50% with liberals in BOTH parties attacking Akin...she is in real trouble
Its sick that so many PhonyCons are trying to push Akin out
Thank you!
Any new polls? I thought Akin had recovered remarkably since his foot, calf and thigh in the mouth moment.
I read the ABC article and I thought it was actually a pretty balanced article, especially for a MSM article. Akin was my congressman when I live in MO and I think he will win. In a way it was fortunate that this “gaff” happened early in the campaign.
I am also sure that sissy Priebus and the rest of the GOP establishment will pony up when they see that Akin is the difference between winning and losing the Senate. They just have to posture big now and will be able to say that they tried to get him to quit but that he wouldn’t. Money will flow his way if he is in striking distance!
Akin is an idiot.
But he’s our idiot.
This poor man stepped into a “macada” pile. Funny that Biden can said stupid things every week and nothing is made of it, but let a Republican say one dumb thing and he’s eviscerated. Further proof that if Democrats did not have double standards, they’d have no standards at all.
You know, the DEMS don’t shoot their wounded, they rally around them. We try our best to shoot each other, all the make the Media happy!
