Anyone who wants to take the time to read the history can read about German soldiers murdering families in their homes in Alsace and Belgium as they invaded
and retreated.
I go through Germany a lot on business and the attitudes are still there. Especially in the Deutsche Polizei, who still snigger and sneer at any non-Germans.
Not all of Germany is like that but it's still a strong undercurrent, buttressed by their economic resurgence. In the 70's, those attitudes were under tight wraps.
It's a place that really might just deserve a permanent foreign military presence.

I'm sorry. German troops were no angels any more than any other troops. But these conversations sound to me an awful lot like sidelined captives putting on their captors, not to mention the universal temptation of soldiers to exaggerate and exoticize their actions.
