A U.S. Envoy Who Plunged Into Arab Life
The NY Times ^ | September 15, 2012 | STEVEN ERLANGER

Posted on 09/15/2012 7:13:31 PM PDT by RitchieAprile

J. Christopher Stevens, the American ambassador to Libya who was killed in an assault on a diplomatic mission there last week, was happy to gossip, but was revered for listening. A northern Californian with a toothy grin, he had a passion for the Arab world and its language, and he went out of his way to use it, whether with officials or shopkeepers, in an effort to show respect.

In his willingness to allow others to be heard, even when he had an important message to impart, Mr. Stevens was an unusual American diplomat, friends and colleagues say. He allowed himself to be governed by the habits, proprieties and slower pace of the Arab world.

With the State Department on high alert for security threats, especially since the Sept. 11 attacks, and many American diplomats consigned to embassies that resemble fortresses and armored motorcades that do not make unscheduled stops, Mr. Stevens plunged into Arab social life. He traded personal risk for personal contact.

Our current state dept is into magical thinking, And the poor ambassador obviously figured that he could make friends with a cobra and it wouldn’t bite him.

Piedmont — Alameda County. I think he was born in San Francisco.

This is interesting. I originally read it through Riehl World News (Mark Levin gives hat tips to these guys sometimes)

http://hillbuzz.org/breaking-news-two-sources-in-chicago-diplomatic-circles-identify-ambassador-chris-stevens-as-gay-meaning-state-department-sent-gay-man-to-be-ambassador-to-libya-64291

“I’m forever perplexed that actual reporters don’t camp out in these sorts of places because great scoops are very easy to find if you just go in there and ask questions. The Serbian consulate employee identified himself to me as “Dino” and wouldn’t give me any more of a name than that, but told me it was no secret that Chris Stevens was gay and that “it was stupid to send him to Libya as the ambassador when he was a known homosexual”.

Dino explained in great detail that the brutal sodomizing of Stevens’ corpse was something that Muslims do to show the “utmost disrespect to the body” and that this is “a great insult in Islam” reserved for homosexuals. ”It is like making him a woman in death and he will be a woman now after life” the Serbian explained to me. There’s a good chance this guy was Muslim too, and gay, which makes my head spin more than a little since he seemed to have no anger at all in his voice that Muslims in Libya assassinated the American ambassador and then sodomized his corpse.

“He should not have gone there” was the general consensus from this man.
You won’t hear any of this in the media, no doubt, but in Chicago’s diplomatic circles at least there is no doubt that Chris Stevens was gay and that pretty much anyone in the diplomatic world knew that. That includes the Libyans who were hired as security at the consulate in Benghazi who betrayed Ambassador Stevens and assisted in his murder.”

“northern Californian explains a lot. Let me guess, Marin County."

My immediate thought - that, Santa Cruz or Berkeley. So I looked it up - Marin Co guy - went to Berkeley. I'm sorry for him dying, but I honestly can't help but feel it began long ago. I hope he enjoyed the life he lived. It looks like he did because he obviously felt he was doing meaningful things and he tried to make a difference.

A lot of people like deadly snakes too.

But you can’t trust them any more than you can trust a muslim.

I was curious about how long he had been there.

I seems he had been in Libya before in other functions. In the ME for a very long time.

But from what I coud tell had only been an ambassador since June 2012.

He was obviously very idealistic.

Probably not the only reason this travesty happened, but it sure didn’t help.

Shhhh...The Hillbuzz article has been disappeared on this site. There are those here who find such things well difficult to really accept. This fellow seems to have been semi-closeted having a wife and two children. In the lands of the goat intercoursers he could act out his fantasies ala Lawrence of Arabia with muzzie males. The muzzies tolerated him as long as he was good for something and then showed what they really felt about foreigners cruising for queer sex with the sons of the prophet. Our political and cultural elites are far more corrupt and screwed up than any of us want to believe. G-d help us.

Lots of nonsense here: all professional diplomats (career foreign service officers) posted to substantive positions in Arab speaking countries speak Arabic. It is true that not all are sensitive to Muslim sensibilities or sympathetic to Arab aspirations: after 9/11, how could they be? There must be some reason the Times is crazy about this guy: is it that the Canadians, Brit journalists and Palestinians like him? He was a brave man and may he rest in peace. But praise from the vermin at the America-hating Times sullies his memory.

Do you s’pose he fancied himself a new T.E. Lawrence?

Lawrence died in 1935, at age 46, from a motorcycle accident in the UK.

He was born in Grass Valley which is a small town in Nevada County about 25 miles north of Auburn—foothills of the Sierras, I think.

I don't think Stevens was ever married--I think the other man whose name was released right away (it took them a day or two to identify the SEALS) had a wife and children.

As far as I know, the rumors about Stevens are still just rumors. At any rate he was not killed because of his sexual preferences, whatever they were, but because he was the US ambassador...and because of Hillary's regulations which caused him to be in a hostile situation with no weapons in the hands of anyone trustworthy.

Why has the Hillbuzz article disappeared from this site? I’m unfamiliar with Hillbuzz other than this article and that originally there was a link from a reputable site.

But raised in Piedmont, CA. Early reports said he was born in SF. They must have been wrong.

He was never married and left no children. Another person who was murdered left a wife and 2 children. Also, a former room-mate and long time fried of Stevens has a wife and 2 children. You are conflating bios.

I think he was very well informed indeed.
And he knew the risks.

T.E. Lawrence is a very good example of the type. There have been a LOT of British “Lawrence of Arabias”. They were successful to a degree, because it is in fact not extraordinary that a sympathetic foreigner can organize an irregular Arab armed force, or can stir up a revolt, or can even generate fierce personal loyalty.

And it does not seem to matter much if they are homosexual. Plenty of Arabs are, and plenty of Arab leaders.

Also typical of the type is a rather paternalistic view of the Arabs as an endearing but rather hopeless lot. Lawrence certainly didn’t think much of their prospects. His defensive attitude towards them seems to have been a mix of loyalty to his friends (the Hashemite royals) and the sort of protective feelings a naturalist has to an endangered species.
