"Smart people" in America will never back conservative Republicans, or so says Rick Santorum a conservative Republican whose verbal missteps are becoming as well-known as his hardline posturing on social issues.
Santorum, who ended up being Mitt Romney's closest rival for the 2012 Republican nomination, made the comment at the conservative Value Voters Summit in Washington.
"We will never have the media on our side, ever, in this country. We will never have the elite, smart people on our side," Santorum said in a speech to the gathering of conservative activists at a Washington hotel.
Santorum, a former Pennsylvania senator, entered the Republican primary race as a little-known outsider.
But he ran a dogged and hardworking campaign based on his appeal to social conservatives and eventually emerged as a serious threat to the more establishment Romney.
Though Romney eventually triumphed, Santorum's success ensured the nomination process was longer than many had expected and he emerged with a much higher profile.
But Santorum also made several notable gaffes along the way. At one campaign stop where he talked about welfare, he appeared to say that he didn't "want to make black people lives better by giving them somebody else's money". He later claimed he had simply garbled his words, and didn't say "black" people, just something that sounded like "black".

Who is the second R? Ryan wasn’t in yet.
I live in Wisconsin. Congressman Ryan came out in the final hour to back Romney and give out free sandwiches with him.
Romney had breezed into the state once or twice for an hour..Rick spent two weeks here, criss crossing the state, talking to voters, bowling with them, visiting their small towns.
Internals showed a Santorum upset in the works which the GOP-E decided to squelch by twisting Ryan and Ron Johnson’s arms about coming out with a last minute endorsement.
Unfortunately, it worked.
Maybe Santorum used air quotes when he said "smart". : /
Just like when he said he wasn’t concerned about unemployment. The fact is that he was quite correct that unemployment is a symptom of a larger problem which needs to be dealt with.
Unfortunately there are plenty of “conservatives” who behave exactly like the left and will attack at the drop of a hat. The same when Michele Bachmann said we should drill everywhere even in places like the Everglades. It was astounding how quickly those same “conservatives” went full watermelon to attack her. It didn’t take but a few minutes of digging to find that there are a few working oil and gas wells in the everglades now.
Its that kind of moral cowardice that drives me further from the GOP by the day.
The people who think Romney is perfect are in for a real surprise when he’s finally caught in unscripted moments again. After all, he was getting beat up pretty good in some of the debates.
Ah, I see.
It is a pity. I was a Santorum supporter. Now I’m just ABO,
The corrupt media continues to point out the so-called "gaffes", past and present, of conservatives, as their chosen Great Leader methodically and deliberately destroys the country.
Guess not!!
Smart they're not, but they can dream, can't they?
huh?
I think he is being criticized for using abbreviated language. The full word is “Smart-asses”.
During the 1940 and 1950 the conservatives sometimes derogatorily referred to the “smart” people who cottoned up to the Stalinist as the “intelligentsia”, for example Adlai Stevenson was called an “Egghead”. Hiss and a great many other traitors and “Fellow Travelers” (e.g., Mrs. Roosevelt) were “The Intelligentsia” because they acted as though they knew how to change the world for the better.
HOPE AND CHANGE IS NOT NEW
“Ironically, ..... Lenin is famous for his caustic remark that “[the] intelligentsia is not the ‘brain of the nation’, it is the ‘feces of the nation’”. Wikipedia
Incidentally do you think Obama has given Bill Ayers the franchise to provide the Muslims with the American Flags to burn.
I have often wondered where the muslims get so many American flags.
Not to mention all the gaffes of Obama and Biden.
I'm sorry, you must be mistaken; Obama and Biden don't make gaffes. /s
Santorum *IS* the establishment. He was Romney's stalking horse.
How do you get to he 3rd ranking member of the Senate GOP leadership without being establishment?
How do you make a living as a lobbyist without being establishment?
LOL!!! Well I guess I'm in the minority. But your friends on the right understand EXACTLY what Rick was saying. The self-anointed “smart people” or as they like to call themselves “Intellectuals” will never vote for a conservative. Instead they like to pontificate about how brilliant they are and about how stupid conservatives are.
The college professors and inside the beltway leftist love to pound their chests and tell everyone about how book savvy they are as they scream at the top of the lungs that Keynesian economics are the only way to save our economy. Meanwhile those same “Self Anointed - Smart People” watch as our economy spirals out of control.
Amazing how this “Oh So Smart” president of ours has completely lost control of the economy (Let's print more more money!! What do you mean we've been downgraded again??? Print more money!!), and now there's no telling how bad things are going to get due to his (lack of) foreign policy.
And don't even get me started with the mainstream media. Only a media completely in the pocket of the democrat party would consider this news with all the other fires going on around us.
Just throwing my two cents out there. Flame away!! :)
Without a Conservative media to counter the constant streams of pure disinformation running, he is right. Fox News afraid to tell the truth, bending way over backwards to prove how very “fair and balanced” it is, and being owned by the wrong people, doesn’t cut it. Unabashedly Conservative news and educational channels and daily national newspapers are needed. I hear Blaze is running on Dish Network, which hopefully is a start.
