I agree. His appeasements, two-facedness (telling one government he would support them then turnaround and tell their enemy the same thing) and generosity with dangling carrots make him seem weak and of poor character to Middle Eastern culture who would cut his head off and serve his nuts on a platter if they could. Considering that the first pope got crucified upside down rather than abandon Rome, and this pope's immediate predecessor spent his early career in a communist country tweaking the nose of the KGB, a strong sense of self preservation doesn't appear to be part of the job description.
