Considering that the first pope got crucified upside down rather than abandon Rome, and this pope's immediate predecessor spent his early career in a communist country tweaking the nose of the KGB, a strong sense of self preservation doesn't appear to be part of the job description.

No kidding. An attack on the Pope would be an attack on the spiritual side of Western Civilization. It would be too tempting an opportunity to pass up.
