NORTH SIOUX CITY, S.D. Beef Products Inc. sued ABC News, Inc. for defamation Thursday over its coverage of a meat product that critics dub "pink slime," claiming the network damaged the company by misleading consumers into believing it is unhealthy and unsafe.
The Dakota Dunes, S.D.-based meat processor is seeking $1.2 billion in damages for roughly 200 "false and misleading and defamatory" statements about the product officially known as lean, finely textured beef, said Dan Webb, BPI's Chicago-based attorney.
The lawsuit filed in a South Dakota state court also names several individuals as defendants, including ABC news anchor Diane Sawyer and the Department of Agriculture microbiologist who coined the term "pink slime."

News/facts vs opinions/bias is what it comes down to. ABC’s “agenda” will be difficult to prove, for the meat company.
“Its been walked on, scraped off the floor, washed with ammonia, what is wrong with you that you would eat it? it sure as anything aint kosher”
You are so full of it. Floor scrapings are classified by the USDA as positively inedible and thrown into rendering.
Any plant even attempting to use it as an edible product would be shut down immediately and heavily fined. No plant in the country would risk it.
Confusion, anyway.
Those terms are subject to definition, as "meat" necessarily includes connective tissue encasing every myofibril.
Collagen is a polysaccharide, the base material for tendons and cartilege.
See post 102 and stop believing what ABC tells you/
We are talking minutia here. “Lean meat” must only include muscular tissue. Any sustance other than muscular tissue will reduce the percentage lean including connective tissue or any of the other items we have discussed.
Collagen is a component of tendons and cartilage and is in a higher proportion in those but also occurs in in the muscle itself. Collagen is not considered tendons and cartilage but is rather one of many costituents that form those items.
My contention remains that finely textured beef does not conatin a higher % of cartilage, tendons, ligaments or sinew than standard ground beef.
If it hits the floor, it is not going to human consumption. The USDA vets would have a fit.
So you are one of those people who thinks if it is on the internet, it must be true.
I really hope that BPI gets every cent it asked for, and that the amount is doubled with punitive fines as well.
Disney-ABC Television Group has an annual revenue of about $63 billion, so they can celebrate a full judgment against them by saying that “We are helping to support the 99%!”
“I now pick out a cheap cut of beef and have them grind it. “
That’s the best way to go anyway. No worries about e. coli, 100% fresh, 100% unadulterated, and 100% delicious.
I wait until chuck is on sale at Safeway and have them grind it for me.
Mount Athos, I’m glad you like the quote — pass it on whenever you see Sawyer mentioned. DBM stooges NEED to be ridiculed...
carriage_hill: So right. Do you suppose she might be the “bubble-headed blonde” in that song? I think it is titled “Dirty Laundry.”
Seems the obvious is escaping a lot of folks. ABC claims the product is bad for you (i.e. unhealthy). It’s no less healthy than a steak at a 5-star restaurant. It’s beef, and ABC is saying that it’s something else. I’d say that’s a reckless disregard for the truth or falsity of their claim that it’s something else.
That’s interesting.
Stupid bitch! “Oh, look, recycling”
Good idea.
Every time I order a burger I cringe when they ask me how I want it cooked. I tell them I want it cooked, but hope it isn't a hockey puck when I get it.
I DO NOT destroy my steaks, and like them rare to medium-rare (black and red) and would like to be able to have a similar burger...at least medium. When I craft up my own burger I can do that.
Anyone eating beef well done, might as well be eating a shoe.
Thank you for your inputs, even some Freepers have been seriously mislead by the media reports.
It’s good to hear from people in the know.
