For more than 200 years, our party has led the fight for civil rights, health care, Social Security, workers rights, and womens rights.
from a history of the Democratic Party, on DNC Web site.
A number of readers asked about this brief (20 paragraphs or so) history of the Democratic party, especially the first sentence. It certainly appears to ignore the partys long and troubled history with race, literally leaping from the 200 years phrase to 1920, when the womens suffrage amendment was enacted.
The Web history mentions the leadership of President Woodrow Wilson in helping pass the 19th Amendment, without noting that he was a racist or that he repressed civil liberties even to the point of jailing one of his rivals for the presidency in 1914 (socialist Eugene Debs).
The history also highlights the passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Act. Certainly President Lyndon Johnson, a Texas Democrat, played an essential role, but it is worth remembering that 80 percent of the no votes in the Senate came from Democrats, including the late Robert Byrd (W.Va.) and Albert Gore (Tenn.), father of the future vice president. Republican votes, in fact, were essential in winning final passage of the bill.
Of course, a quick little Web history does not give much space for such details.

"KKK parade on Pennsylvania Avenue, August 8, 1925." From the Washington Post's report: "Phantom-like hosts of the Ku Klux Klan spread their white robe over the nation's most historic thoroughfare yesterday in one of the greatest demonstrations this city has ever known. . . . Police estimated that there were 30,000-35,000 in the weird procession -- men, women and children of the Klan."

So, can anybody name one Republican that was a member of the KKK?
At the request of Susan B. Anthony, Sen. A.A. Sargent, a Republican from California, introduced the 19th Amendment in 1878. Sargents amendment (also known as the Susan B. Anthony Amendment) was defeated four times by a Democrat-controlled Senate. When the Republican Party regained control of Congress in 1919, the Equal Suffrage Amendment finally passed the House in May of that year and in the Senate in June.
When the Amendment was submitted to the states, 26 of the 36 states that ratified it had Republican legislatures. Of the nine states that voted against ratification, eight were Democratic. Twelve states, all Republican, had given women full suffrage before the federal amendment was ratified.
On August 18, 1920, Tennessee became the 36th and final state needed to ratify the amendment. The U.S. Secretary of State certified the amendment on Aug. 26, 1920.
The funny thing about the KKK is that it was a powerful terror group for a century while it did the Dems’ bidding. When they reversed course and pandered to blacks, it died off and is now a collection of morons, fools and cranks. Despite what the Dems say, it never supported the Republicans and the Republicans never tried to pander to the morons who supported it. For the 100 years between 1870 and 1970, the Republicans led the fight to outlaw it as a domestic terror organization, only to be undermined by the Dems.
No, and what a creepy looking bunch of white robed, Democrats.
I have to come out and say it that the Democrats are a bunch of lying sons of bitches. Never thought I would publicly say that.
There are some who claim that both Warren G. Harding and Calvin Coolidge belonged to the KKK but there is only the slimmest of circumstantial evidence to support it.
I seriously doubt it.

Lies, all lies. But those that don't know history believe it.
Coolidge spoke out in favor of the civil rights of African Americans and Catholics. He appointed no known members of the Ku Klux Klan to office; indeed the Klan lost most of its influence during his term.
In 1924, Coolidge responded to a letter that claimed the United States was a "white man's country":
....I was amazed to receive such a letter. During the war 500,000 colored men and boys were called up under the draft, not one of whom sought to evade it. [As president, I am] one who feels a responsibility for living up to the traditions and maintaining the principles of the Republican Party. Our Constitution guarantees equal rights to all our citizens, without discrimination on account of race or color. I have taken my oath to support that Constitution....
On June 2, 1924, Coolidge signed the Indian Citizenship Act, which granted full U.S. citizenship to all American Indians, while permitting them to retain tribal land and cultural rights. However, the act was unclear on whether the federal government or the tribal leaders retained tribal sovereignty. Coolidge repeatedly called for anti-lynching laws to be enacted, but most Congressional attempts to pass this legislation were filibustered by Southern Democrats. Coolidge appointed some African Americans to federal office. He retained Harding's choice of Walter L. Cohen of New Orleans, Louisiana, as the comptroller of customs and offered Cohen the post of minister to Liberia, which the businessman declined.
Every Republican president has supported Civil Rights and until the 1960s, the Democrats have fought to overturn every Civil Rights law. There is very little cross over -- the vast majority of Dems believed in White Supremacy and the vast majority of Republicans fought for Civil Rights for blacks.
Hehe!
Yeah, Sh-u-re!

Whereas the Democratic Party has never apologized for their horrific atrocities and racist practices committed against African Americans during the past two hundred years, nor for the residual impact that those atrocities and practices and current soft bigotry of low expectations are having on us today...”

The bullshit party strikes again.
Well boys, I think it’s time for us to R-U-N-N-O-F-T
