Obama Calls for Amendment Limiting Free-Speech Rights By Matt Cover August 30, 2012

(CNSNews.com) – President Barack Obama endorsed a constitutional amendment that would restrict the free-speech rights of political activist groups by overturning the Supreme Court decision in the landmark Citizens United v FEC case that granted First Amendment rights to corporations.

“Over the longer term, I think we need to seriously consider mobilizing a constitutional amendment process to overturn Citizens United,” Obama wrote during a question and answer session on the website Reddit on Wednesday.

“Even if the amendment process falls short, it can shine a spotlight of the super-PAC phenomenon and help apply pressure for change.”

In its decision, the Supreme Court said that the government could not restrict the free-speech rights of organizations during elections, striking down key provisions of the McCain-Feingold campaign finance law.

That law restricted how much money independent political organizations could spend and banned them from engaging in election-related speech 60 days prior to a general election.

In his concurring opinion, Chief Justice John Roberts wrote that the government was arguing for direct censorship of political speech, asking the court to allow the banning of books, pamphlets, and any other type of speech the government deemed necessary.

“The Government urges us in this case to uphold a direct prohibition on political speech,” Roberts wrote. “It asks us to embrace a theory of the First Amendment that would allow censorship not only of television and radio broadcasts, but of pamphlets, posters, the Internet, and virtually any other medium that corporations and unions might find useful in expressing their views on matters of public concern.

So, to those supporting a third party candidate or staying home, is Romney still the same as 0bama?
0bama will issue EOs to effectively repeal each amendment in the BOR if he is elected for a 2nd term. No chance to recover from that.

Not news.

He and the entire assembled Left began clamoring for this about 10 minutes after the ink on the Court’s decision was dry.

Then we must ban Union political activity as well

I know that corporations under settled law have the same rights as individuals in many regards, but I'm wondering if that's true of Union organizations?

Here's an alternative: Since government workers are more than mere employees, and their jobs are needed for fulfillment of the government's role, perhaps we could get a constitutional amendment to ban the formation of government unions, and ban all unions from participating in the political process as organized groups.

It'll never happen, but think about the ramifications if it did?

Obama never looks at the unintended consequences of his actions, so if he wants to talk about Consitutional Amendments, here's one for him:

Any government official elected to the Presidency, Vice Presidency, Senate, or House of Representatives who is deemed to have violated his oath of office, shall be removed from office immediately upon being deemed to have done so. In the case of the Presidency, the trial shall be conducted in the House of Representatives, with a simple majority of a quorum of at least 75% of the membership of the House present and voting, required to convict.

Great, I'm sure 0bama will have no problem getting 3/4 of the states to agree to amend the Constitution.

It would be far more productive, salient, and germane to pass a Constitutional Amendment preventing us from ever again using Affirmative Action as a justification for electing an unqualified, unprincipled, morally devoid mouth-breathing imbecile as our President.

How about that, President O'Bunga?

John McCain, as well as Obama, will be happy if Citizens United is overturned.

Actually, the USSC did overturn Citizens United. What Obama wants is limitations on free speech so that Citizens United can be re-enacted.

This is the type of tyranny we will get if the Liberal Messiah gets a second term. Such an amendment would have to limit individual free speech rights to be effective.

If they hold a Constitutional Convention, I hope they consider abolishing the 17th amendment... Now that’s something I can support 100%!

Amen and don't forget the Sixteenth!

It says “Congress shall pass no law”.

It doesn’t say anything about “this document only applies to citizens” - which is probably a good thing or the illegals would be screaming.

This is nothing new, the Dems hate citizen’s united decision. It drives them mad. Obama yelled at the SCOTUS over it at the SOTU. This is just to get lib base donations.

This is about as meaningful as when Republicans say they are for amendments to get Republican support, just BS to get base donations and primary support.
