NEW ORLEANS (Reuters) - Tropical Storm Isaac closed in on the U.S. Gulf of Mexico coast on Monday, triggering some mandatory evacuation orders and disrupting U.S. offshore oil production as it threatened to make landfall between Florida and Louisiana as a Category 2 hurricane.
The wide, slow-moving storm swiped south Florida on Sunday and strengthened over the warm Gulf waters. It was expected to reach land Tuesday night or early Wednesday, the anniversary of devastating Hurricane Katrina seven years ago.
The U.S. National Hurricane Center warned that the storm could push vast amounts of seawater over the shore, flooding the northern Gulf coast with a storm surge of up to 12 feet in some areas. Isaac was expected to slow down and pour "tremendous amounts" of rain on the region, causing potentially deadly flooding far inland, Hurricane Center Director Rick Knabb said.
"The weather will start going downhill overnight tonight on the northern Gulf Coast," Knabb told reporters on a conference call. "Wherever it is people are going to be during the storm, they need to get there tonight."

Obama declares state of emergency as Isaac bears down

US President Barack Obama Monday declared a state of emergency in Louisiana as Tropical Storm Isaac gathered strength and threatened New Orleans, seven years after it was pummeled by Hurricane Katrina.
Obama informed the Gulf Coast state’s governor, Bobby Jindal, that he was taking the move to free up federal funds and aid, during a conference call with local officials preparing for the storm, expected to come ashore on Tuesday.
The president also convened a briefing with officials including Federal Emergency Management Agency administrator (FEMA) Craig Fugate, hours before Isaac was expected to become a Category One hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico.
FEMA, along with other government agencies, including the Department of Defense, has staged emergency supplies closer to areas expected to experience severe weather.
Obama promises to help Gulf Coast governors with Tropical Storm Isaac

President Barack Obama on Monday promised the governors of Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi that they would have “the resources they need” to cope with Tropical Storm Isaac, on track to batter the Gulf Coast in the coming days, the White House said in a statement.
Concerns about the storm led Republicans, gathered at their presidential nominating convention in Tampa, to hold only a short symbolic session.
Obama got a briefing with FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate and Director Rick Knabb of the National Hurricane Center, which has predicted that Isaac could strengthen into a Category 1 hurricane later in the day.
In concert with the Defense Department, FEMA has created “Incident Support Bases” with critical supplies in Jacksonville, Fla., and Montgomery, Ala.; they’ve also deployed personnel to Alabama, Florida, Louisiana and Mississippi “to work to make sure there are no unmet needs.”
“The president directed Administrator Fugate to ensure that FEMA was prepared regardless of the ultimate strength and impact of the storm,” the White House said.

Good. I can’t believe that Obama of all people is taking this seriously. Pigs might fly after all. Hell may freeze over. Something is in the White House water today for some reason.
That d... Bush and his oil buddies again. What....Obama’s the president? Well....it’s still Bush’s fault somehow.
Got that right. Even CNN. Rush played an audio clip of their newscast pointing out
this storm is a repeat of Karina...with a snarky low-key reference to how Bush failed...
But Obama is President now. He just has to wave his hand and the winds will calm and the ocean level will sink.
Have no fear, BO is with us now.

Isaac should be arrested for “menacing” but in these lenient times, he will only be given a warning and an Obama button.
I know that many are thinking the same thing. It seems as if the press are aching for a big deal out of Hurricane Isaac so that it moves the Republican Convention coverage to the second page. I am watching this situation with a close eye.
Norm, am I the only one who’s been watching this thing move west to Texas or am I nuts! {
Is Isaac pooping out? In the latest satellite image it looks like it’s been cut in half. A few days ago a FReeper opined that it might hit a “dry patch of air”, at which thought I scoffed, but here it is. They were showing this on TWC, and just a few minutes ago one of their talkers mentioned that Isaac was being ... I forget the word, but something violent ... truncated or something. He passed off to a colleague who brushed it off, proceeding to say that what people were saying to him was, “This is such a big storm, how ill it affect me?”
Now just as I type this I heard a weather babe say “dry air” about four times in twenty seconds.
Stay tuned!
I do hope Isaac fizzles. As for the GOP delegates, Isaac completely missed Tampa and gave all one good day to enjoy this nice city.
...Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi that they would have the resources they need...

Once again ignoring Texas (unless Perry has not requested aid). Last I saw, Isaac was likely to make landfall West of NOLA and bring East Texas into the mix.
The media also conveniently forgets that it was the LA Gov. Blanco who refused to request aid, even though Pres. Bush began calling her directly for three days before Katrina hit. ...Guess it’s so much easier for them to blame Bush.
