Obama declares state of emergency as Isaac bears down

US President Barack Obama Monday declared a state of emergency in Louisiana as Tropical Storm Isaac gathered strength and threatened New Orleans, seven years after it was pummeled by Hurricane Katrina.

Obama informed the Gulf Coast state’s governor, Bobby Jindal, that he was taking the move to free up federal funds and aid, during a conference call with local officials preparing for the storm, expected to come ashore on Tuesday.

The president also convened a briefing with officials including Federal Emergency Management Agency administrator (FEMA) Craig Fugate, hours before Isaac was expected to become a Category One hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico.

FEMA, along with other government agencies, including the Department of Defense, has staged emergency supplies closer to areas expected to experience severe weather.

President Barack Obama on Monday promised the governors of Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi that they would have “the resources they need” to cope with Tropical Storm Isaac, on track to batter the Gulf Coast in the coming days, the White House said in a statement.

Concerns about the storm led Republicans, gathered at their presidential nominating convention in Tampa, to hold only a short symbolic session.

Obama got a briefing with FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate and Director Rick Knabb of the National Hurricane Center, which has predicted that Isaac could strengthen into a Category 1 hurricane later in the day.

In concert with the Defense Department, FEMA has created “Incident Support Bases” with critical supplies in Jacksonville, Fla., and Montgomery, Ala.; they’ve also deployed personnel to Alabama, Florida, Louisiana and Mississippi “to work to make sure there are no unmet needs.”

“The president directed Administrator Fugate to ensure that FEMA was prepared regardless of the ultimate strength and impact of the storm,” the White House said.

Good. I can’t believe that Obama of all people is taking this seriously. Pigs might fly after all. Hell may freeze over. Something is in the White House water today for some reason.

They’re all over this one.

Got that right. Even CNN. Rush played an audio clip of their newscast pointing out
this storm is a repeat of Karina...with a snarky low-key reference to how Bush failed...
