THE GOAL of attrition through law enforcement for illegal immigrants or, to use the term Mitt Romney favors, self-deportation has suffered a series of setbacks. The latest came Monday when a federal appeals court blocked major parts of Alabamas draconian immigration law, including one that required public schools to collect information on pupils immigration status. It is increasingly clear that Republican state lawmakers and governors have gone too far in their campaign to harass and bully the nations 11 million illegal immigrants in the hope that they will simply disappear.
Alabama has the distinction of having enacted the nations only immigration law that was more aggressive and more blatantly designed to banish illegal immigrants than Arizonas. The idea was to persecute a class of people who had come to the state to fill jobs most Americans dont want, thus making life so miserable for them that they would leave. State legislators were unmoved by farmers and others who pointed out that the departure of these workers would leave no one to harvest crops and do other jobs critical to the states economy.

I walked out of a local KFC a few weeks ago because a woman could not understand me and had to ask for translation from another "crop picker" behind the counter
persecute a class of people who had come to the state to fill jobs most Americans dont want,
Jobs most Americans don’t want at slave wages
Puleeze..........the courts are a major problem in America!
Please excuse my ignorance, but is that not the purpose of immigation laws, i.e., "banish illegal immigrants"? Or are these laws supposed to in essence say, "Hi there. Nice to see you"?
And so what if Alabama was harassing illegales. For corn sakes it has the constitutional right to wage war against invaders. Mere harassment is penny ante stuff.
The idea seems to be to tell them apologetically that their presence is not in the very best form of civic conduct... but hey they oughtn’t to let that get between them and a gummit bennie.
Obviously you are not a graduate of Harvard Law School and a itinerant law lecturer at the University of Chicago, or you would have known that they really didn’t mean what they wrote the immigration laws.
“harassment?” No bias there! /s
