Akin Tells Hannity That Romney Exploited Rape Statement Controversy For Political Gain
Mediate ^ | Tuesday August 21, 2012

Appearing on Sean Hannity’s radio program for the second time in as many days, Missouri Republican Senate candidate Todd Akin attacked the GOP’s presidential candidate, Mitt Romney, for joining a chorus of Republicans asking him to withdraw from the race. Akin said that Romney had blown the controversy out of proportion and implied that he had done so for his own political gain.

Hannity asked Akin, given the number of prominent Republican politicians asking Akin to drop out including Romney, if he is even pausing to consider leaving the Senate race in Missouri.

“Let me ask you this,” Akin began. “If you were in Romney’s position, don’t you think that he may have bid this thing up and made a bigger deal about it than he needed to?”

“Why couldn’t he run his race and I run mine,” asked Akin. “If things really look like they’re getting in trouble in Missouri than maybe — but he has just assumed.”

“Missouri was a must have state.”

Agree. Once again, snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. That should be the motto of the Republican Party.

What if the Tea Party took on its first challenge to run an independent, a la Murkowski?

The candidate would probably lose in a 3-way race. But they would allow Republicans/Conservatives across the entire country - and particularly other office-seekers - to publicly endorse and support an alternative candidate.

That would pull at least some benefit out of this, acting as a firewall in other close races and allowing GOP/Conservative candidates in them to inoculate themselves against the "War on Women" charges that are going to be flying from the Dems between now and the election.

If Akin costs the Americans the Senate and therefore the last possible chance at stopping Obamacare.....that is really, really awful. A gaffe of historic proportions with consequences for all freedom loving people. He seems like a pretty bad guy for allowing his ego to put America at risk like this.

Yes, its all a matter of damage control from here on out. It was nice being on the offensive for one week. Knew it couldn’t continue.

Politics is full of arrogant ego driven sob’s like Akin, so not surprised that he is not quitting.

Absolutely true. My wife worked on the Hill for a long time. A few good people but by and large there’s no shortage of self-serving, arrogant ego’s there.

As if Akin was proposing some serious policy initiative that would put our country in further trouble; as if he takes a casual stand on rape of any kind. I'm witnessing the legitimate rape of common sense and logic on this thread; folks getting their semantic panties in a twist over one ill-chosen word.

Happy to see Todd Akin not afraid to concede principle out of fear or political expedience. Wish it happened more often. But with republicans like the spineless twits showing up on this thread, he certainly doesn't need enemies. Hopefully the people of the great state of Missouri have more sense and principle than is on display here.

I see he got the gun to his head alright and doesn’t need any help with the trigger.

Don’t jerk it, dipsh*t.....squeeeeze.

I don't think he can do it, he already shot himself in both feet and one hand and he is shaking a little. It is going to be hard for him to hit his own pea size brain.

Why did the Dems fund Akins so heavily? Because they knew he was a loose cannon. There were other genuinely conservative candidates.

Akin is an aging six-term Congressman who looks like his baldness cures and facelifts have sunk into his brain.

The GOP came out with its best pro-life platform in many years today, and Rep. Missouri Ego stole all attention from it with his stupid shenanigans.

The sad point is, Akin is clearly delusional and has no clue how much damage he's doing to the country.

I think he's just following his own agenda (whatever it is).

Puts me in mind of the accounts of CJ Roberts' resistance to any discussion with the conservative justices re obamacare. Just did what he wanted to do, despite the fact that it would harm the country.

No he didn’t. MANY others did before Romney did.

This prick will probably accept hosting Saturday Night Live just so that he can “minister to those sinners”. That’ll be a hoot.

I have an idea. Romney and Ryan can drop out and we can run a national ticket of Huckabee and Akin. The “pro-life” zealots would get an endless chubby out of that...only if, of course, they could actually get a chubby.

Happy to see Todd Akin not afraid to concede principle out of fear or political expedience.

Taking big bucks from democrats to finance his campaign doesn't show much principle.

He would have been politically beholden to the hands that fed him.

No, the GOP establishment stole the spotlight by creating this controversy and siccing their lapdogs like Hannity on Akin to try and make him drop out. If the GOP had stood strong, supported him and accepted his apology like every good, common sense American would do if Akin was a member of their family, church or social group, the controversy would be dying down and the GOP could have discussed another issue today.

The GOP does not look like the party of family values today. They look like a bunch of crass political consultants who want to win at all costs no matter what good people they have to step on to do so. No surprise of course, since this scorched earth strategy is exactly what Romney and his staff did in the past to Palin and Mitt's primary opponents. It's a turn-off to the kind of average, everyday, middle class Americans they're supposed to be attracting. These people look like the Washington elites that they are and not normal people.

"Political gain"

Well, yes, Rep. Akin, in an election season and in campaigning, "political gain" is kinda the goal.

Every time mitt opens his mouth is one more reason not to vote for him.

Every time Obama opens his mouth is one more reason to vote for Mitt. If Obama wins, it’s truely game over. The country will never recover. It’s that serious.

“I’m happy Akin is attacking Romney. It makes it easier for RR to dissociate themselves from him.”

Yep. This is bizarro stuff the more he runs his mouth. Only a moron or a plant would bash the top of the party ticket. Akin is running as a R not as a “conservative” and that requires being a team player.
