...played a role in the death of Ilyona Soptic at age 55.
The ad features Joe Soptic, 62, of Missouri, who lost his job when GST Steel of Kansas Cityowned by Bain and other investors for eight yearswas closed. As melancholy music plays, Mr. Soptic says that when the plant closed, he and his family lost their health-care coverage and "a short time after that, my wife became ill." Her illness was diagnosed five years later. "I don't think Mitt Romney understands what he's done to people's lives by closing the plant," Mr. Soptic says in the ad.
The steel plant was purchased in 1993 and closed in 2001. Mr. Romney departed Bain in 1999 and had no role in the decision to close the plant, his campaign said.
In an interview, Mr. Soptic said he thought the ad was fair. But he also said of Mr. Romney: "I'm not blaming him for her death. I wouldn't do that."
Mr. Soptic said that his wife was receiving health insurance through her employer at the time he lost his job at GST Steel, though she later suffered an injury, left her job and lost her insurance coverage. He could not say precisely when this occurred.
Mr. Soptic said that after he lost his job, he found work as a school custodian about six months later and had the option to put her on his insurance plan. But he opted not to, he said, because he could not afford the more than $350 monthly premium on the $25,000 salary he was making, on top of paying his mortgage and a daughter's college tuition. Ilyona Soptic was diagnosed with cancer in 2006 and died that year.

Ouch, babe...
This lying fool chose to pay for his daughter’s college tuition rather than his wife’s insurance. As though the daughter could not have attended Junior college or gone part time and worked.
Obama’s lying is truly evil. This man’s comfort with lying is telling.
No wonder this guy does not want to talk about it anymore. He is getting creamed as the facts surface. Heck he would be getting a fine under Obamacare for not buying health insurance.
Wonder what this dirtbag’s car payment was. Talk about pissing on your wife’s grave.
Pray for America
Nobody ever said liberals were very smart.

This guy can remember his $25,000 salary amount, and the $350 a month cost of his health insurance from 10 years ago, but he can't remember when his wife was injured on the job? Especially an injury that led to her leaving her job? That's BS.
Soptic admits Bain Capital offered him a buyout...
I’m thinkin’ maybe through wrong priorities that Soptic himself “killed his wife”.
At any rate, he’s scum, putting an Obama2012 bumper sticker on his wife’s gravesite (hypothetically speaking).
Funny, ain’t it? The lst Joe was a plumber, and through him, we knew obama for exactly what he was. Now here is joe number 2, (pun intended,) showing us obama was even worse than we thought...if that’s possible.
The moral of the story is that it takes a plumber to get rid of unwanted number 2.
If you buy an American company you owe the employees and their families health insurance for life.
KC has some great junior colleges which are relatively inexpensive. Apparently he felt his daughter was more important than his wife. Bad choice IMO. And people wonder why some young adults expect everything to be handed to them.
Probably not hypothetical at all.
My mom said today unprovoked
The PResident is a liar.
That’s how bad Obama has gotten. What goes around comes around.
So he killed his own wife. Romney had nothing to do with it.
I’ve been laid off three times. You readjust priorities and budgets to get through. For a responsible person (obviously not a Democrat), you purchase COBRA insurance to tide you over and make sure you and your family are protected against catastrophe.
He’s a moron who gambled with the lives of his wife and family. I’m very sorry he lost his wife to cancer, but foregoing catastrophic health coverage is not a wise life decision.
What kind of scum would participate with the DNC in doing this kind of ad? Oh, I know. A typical Democrat. They really are sick.
The more I read, the more it sounds like this man is just desperate to blame someone for the consequences of his own decisions. Possibly he is desperately needy for attention, too.
The really sad part is that Zippy’s campaign is so pathetic that they are willing to exploit this, regardless of the facts.
Hard to tell the bigger dirtbag. Septic or his Kenyan idol.
Hey your answer should be a GOOD CAMPAIGN FOR ROMney to hammer about the fine under Obamacare! Hello, any ROMNEY people paying attention - this stuff is just too easy not to use in the campaign...

“Im very sorry he lost his wife to cancer”
But we don’t even know if she had been insured it would have prevented the cancer.
In the ad he says that she “probably” didn’t tell him that she was sick because she didn’t have insurance. But, we don’t know that. Cancer can come with no warning.
This is just trumped up lying.
Even beyond that...by the time she had symptoms and was taken to the hospital and it was discovered what it was, no amount of insurance would have made a difference.
It was a factually false ad in many ways - he said she got sick “a short time later” but didn’t want to go to the doctor because they knew they didn’t have insurance...now we know she had insurance for some time afterward so a “short time” could not have been correct, yet that’s what he said. It was discovered 7 years after Romney left Bain - there is no way he had any responsibility. The plant also would have shut down sooner but for Bain - years sooner. So he would have been better off if Bain had not bought the plant and it shut down years before and he still lost the insurance? Any way you slice it - there is nothing true about the ad, other than he tragically lost his wife. I really can’t understand why someone would use this for a partisian political attack like this.
But he's looking forward to ObamaScare, where the fines will be $325 a month per person, but will STILL not provide him with insurance. Some people are just born extra stupid.
Besides the ad being false and despicable, there is something else to note. Within 24 hours, it’s been torn to shreds. How incompetent are Obama’s people that they ran the ad in the first place? Or are they so arrogant that they think this will fly?
The answer is YES!
If I was his daughter, I would not have accepted tuition money if it meant my mom went without insurance!
A couple of years ago, I was in a Catholic bookstore. When I went up to the cashier, there were three older ladies talking. I joined the conversation and, when I mentioned Obama, all four of us said simultaneously, "He lies!"
I had never seen something like that happen.
Maybe people are figuring it out.
Definitely not. It sounds like no one in the family cared what happened to her. There is a lot more to this story. I'll look for it on NBC. /s
Just imagine how many guys are going to lose their wives after losing their jobs at Solyndra! This is going to get ugly and it’s going to be Barry the Kenyan Guy’s fault. Axelrod and David the Poof too!
I'm sure the "news" media will skip this little nugget as "inconvenient" .
Sounds like an easy scam to me...
Meanwhile, Mr. Septic (progressive ghoul) is working his second bogus anti-Romney rant.
Both are likely to resurface again and again between now and November.
It does not matter one bit that they are both proved to be liars...the great lie has been told, repeated, and will be accepted as gospel by the believers and some number of hopeful "undecideds".
Lies work.
Sounds like an easy scam to me...

No surprises here. Something reeks in the White House
Yuh gambled and lost
Desperation. They don’t have anyone better to put in front of the cameras, and they are just throwing ideas at the wall in the hopes that something, anything will stick.
This is the most outrageous, fatuous, despicable piece of political advertising imaginable.
We know who is really waging the war on women: Obama & his allies. They can't help but LIE and exploit.
This entire case is a sick fraud.
Wow, it keeps getting worse for Sopitc, his house of lies and the Obama campaign.
Wow! Who would have thunk it, a Democrat lying? What’s next?
Everyone get hyper the minute you mention COBRA, but it’s the real cost of health care if your employer is left out of the scheme. For the most part, it’s a decent plan....just pricey. For anyone who is about to be laid off...I would strongly advise you to sign up for COBRA, and use it if necessary.
Now Soptic says Romney didn't kill his wife, he had the chance to insure his wife but had other priorities and well, what was the point of the ad? Oh yeah, kill Romney's reputation.
Wow... great work on this, kristinn.
FReepers: Drop whatever you're doing and check this out! (Full info at top of thread)
Smells another contrived “controversy”, to push support for Extortion-Care. Wouldn’t even be surprised if the Hillary-Romney group even put it out there on purpose, right out of the movie theme “Oscar”, in attempt to garner sympathy in attempt to normalize Extortion-Care.
Thank god that all the laid off GM dealers and US coal workers are healthy.
I’m no lawyer but this ad is so dirty it may actually cross the line in libelous. The makers of the ad knew it to be untrue (or certainly should have) and it seems to have been maliciously used to sully Mr. Romney.

BLITZER: Its inaccurate, its not responsible, its misleadingyoure still going to go ahead and play it.A video of the exchange is in the linked source.BURTON: Well, Wolf, just like we just talked about: What this ad does is tell the story of one guy and the impact that Mitt Romney had on him.
BLITZER: Its misleading to tell
BURTON: Well, this is your opinion. But, but
BLITZER: Most independent fact-checkers, and were independent
BURTON: What fact in that ad is wrong?
BLITZER: The impression that you get that he killed her.
BURTON: So youre saying that thats an impression.
BLITZER: Anyone who watches that 60-second ad comes away and says, Mitt Romneys responsible, at least indirectly, for this lovely womans death.
BURTON: I just dont think thats true. And we would never make that case. The point of the ad
BOLDUAN: Well then, the ad fails, because thats the message you take away from it, Bill. Whatever message was intended in this commercial is notnobody hears.
BURTON: Its clearly lost on some folks, make no mistake about that. But the truth is, is that what this ad is about, is what Mitt Romney wants his campaign to be about.
