Bloomberg’s pro-breast-feeding initiative to lock away baby formula at 27 hospitals

The nanny state is going after moms.

Mayor Bloomberg is pushing hospitals to hide their baby formula behind locked doors so more new mothers will breast-feed.

Starting Sept. 3, the city will keep tabs on the number of bottles that participating hospitals stock and use — the most restrictive pro-breast-milk program in the nation.

Under the city Health Department’s voluntary Latch On NYC initiative, 27 of the city’s 40 hospitals have also agreed to give up swag bags sporting formula-company logos, toss out formula-branded tchotchkes like lanyards and mugs, and document a medical reason for every bottle that a newborn receives.

While breast-feeding activists applaud the move, bottle-feeding moms are bristling at the latest lactation lecture.

“If they put pressure on me, I would get annoyed,” said Lynn Sidnam, a Staten Island mother of two formula-fed girls, ages 4 months and 9 years. “It’s for me to choose.”

Under Latch On NYC, new mothers who want formula won’t be denied it, but hospitals will keep infant formula in out-of-the-way secure storerooms or in locked boxes like those used to dispense and track medications.

With each bottle a mother requests and receives, she’ll also get a talking-to. Staffers will explain why she should offer the breast instead.

Must be that Bloomberg; like other Lefties; believes ‘China’ does it better.

Re: What normal male would want to be around this tyrant weasel busybody of a jerk.

I find what Mayor Bloomberg says... to make a lot of sense--

Gadzooks, Barrack... it says 'normal male' up there!

President Obama is my party's idea... of a normal male, Bender--

Well, Nancy has got you there... Bend--

The obsession with breast feeding is a religion, just like the religion of global warming.

Our now-4-year-old absolutely didn’t like breast feeding and we switched to bottles (though augmented with a breast pump) and he is bigger (not fatter), stronger, and healthier than all our friends’ and neighbors’ kids of around the same age. We are constantly amazed at how physically frail the children of the breast-feeding-worshipers are.

I’m not saying breast feeding is wrong. Again, we augmented formula with breast milk.

But it is a religion. Note the moron on this thread who claims formula is a “poison”.

Bloomberg imagines that all breasts are the same and work just fine ~ at least the ones he hires do.

So will C-section delivered babies just have to starve? It took about a week and a half for my wife to recover from the shock and start producing breast milk after delivery--every time. But don't try to get the lactation specialists nazis to understand that.

Depending on what a 'Mother' eats, drinks and or 'recreates'; breast milk can be poison. As well; an angry Mother; forced to 'breast feed' is not giving off the best milk either.

These Leftists need first; to control themselves. It is THEIR oompuslive need to control others that is destroying all vestiges of an individuals 'freedom of choice'.

Message to the Mayor; Get A Grip - on yourself; and leave your the citizens of New York, alone. Think it time to see this compulsive need - the 'totalitarian inclinations' - as SICK; and threatening enough to demand 'redress' per treatment.

Close to 100% of breast feeding mothers supplement w formula, especially at the beginning. For some mothers it takes 7 days to even see a drop of colostrum. Average is 3-5 days.

>>“[poison] That’s a little strong.”<<

Both my kids and my Godson would be dead, see that word, DEAD, without infant formula. My sister nearly starved her son to death because she insisted “Breast is best”. He is now almost blind because of it.

Perhaps you should hold your rhetoric in check. There is a reason why there were “Wet Nurses” before formula. Any organic formula will not have HFCS, including Walmart’s brand. In fact, “Lactose” is listed as the sugar in Enfamil and Parent’s Choice.

Also, getting your medical information from YouTube may not be a good idea.

How many kids did Bloomy breastfeed?

I had to take medication immediately after giving birth and couldn't have breast feed if I wanted to. One crazy nurse kept telling me I had too, it was best. I immediately called my doctor and he told her if I would have listened to her I could have poisoned my newborn.

It's a choice. And what I think many people don't realize is if you eat unhealthy things, so does your baby. One mothers baby I know was breast fed and malnourished and colicky. The mother ate hardly anything healthy and to much spicy food. switched to a quality formula and the baby was fine. And don't get me started on the women I've seen brag about breastfeeding while downing several glasses of wine.

It depends on what a mother eats, drinks, or recreates? Why is that a problem? Hizzoner can just regulate that as well.

In fact, NYC would be better if everyone were just kept in cages with 24/7 monitoring and prescribed feeding and exercise programs. They could be released for work as long as they are escorted by a minder and wear biometric monitoring equipment.

My daughter would not take to breast feeding. I guess Mike wants children like that to die. This Mayor is out of control. He is nuts.

My daughter is Just fine also.....I’m so sick of the nursing nannies.... I tried with my daughter and was unable to feed her, and formula was a godsend. People need to mind their own business, yes breast milk is better but there is a reason for formula and it not just for convenience.

Doomberg is a freaking idiot. Pretty soon they will have armed guards at the grocery checkout inspecting bags for cookies and chips!

I am pro-breastfeeding. Breastfed all three of my children. HOWEVER, formula can be a life SAVER in some situations and is not poison. Inflammatory labeling is not helpful for moms in heartbreaking situations where formula is the only resort.

(Before you respond, I am a certified lactation counselor, and have been educated fully on the “poison” aspect of formula.)

I have a grandson whose life was saved because of the availability of forumla. He would have died of malnutrition and dehydration if left to the whims of zealots.

any one that believes formula is poison is a nut case....My first child could not breast feed without causing the breast to bleed...using a pump brought out pink milk...people that don’t know shit should shut up and we won’t think they are so stupid..

"Coming: you don’t have to breast feed your baby - but those who don’t breast feed will be subject to a tax (direct any and all complaints to John Roberts).

I need a slight clarification on this tax.
Is this tax gender specific? Does it including people who do not have children and never will?
