(CBS News) President Obama and Mitt Romney are effectively tied in the race for the presidency, according to a new CBS News/New York Times survey.

Forty-seven percent of registered voters nationwide who lean towards a candidate back Romney, while 46 percent support the president. Four percent are undecided. The one percentage point difference is within the survey's three point margin of error.

Romney leads by eight points among men; the president leads by five points among women.

The president's supporters are more likely to strongly back their candidate. Fifty-two percent strongly favor Mr. Obama, while just 29 percent of Romney voters strongly back the presumptive Republican nominee.

They had Reagan behind in the polls with carter, Reagan and mondale about even, GWB behind.

If it is even now, romney will win in a landslide.

Exactly, you have to factor in the heavy sampling bias of these liberal networks.

Both candidates have net unfavorable ratings. Forty-eight percent of registered voters view the president unfavorably, while 36 percent view him favorably. Romney is viewed unfavorably by 36 percent and favorably by 32 percent. Nearly one in three say they do not yet have an opinion about the presumptive Republican nominee.

Looks as though all the Bain attacks did were drive up Obama's negatives! BWAHAHA!!

Cap, how the hell can this be? Half the voters in the country would go with a jive-ass community organizer from where? Again?

This ain't right. What is it? The Tattooed fat people vote? What? They must be sampling members of African-American Motorcycle Gangs and single white women who own more than 5 cats.

If a poll shows Romney ahead by one point, you know the reality is he is at least 5 points ahead.

easy. The stupid losers outnumber us 2 to 1. The only reason we stand a chance in the elections is because we vote and they sit home on their worthless fat lazy asses.

Agree Rubio will give the quickest poll bounce.... otherwise this is Cbs and that is not good news for Bambi.... I want to NOT believe all these polls saying it is even as that is what is in the medias best interest actually.... keeps everyone glued to the race....

Since this poll is of RVs and Romney does better with LVs, you’re probably right.
