Dark economic clouds gather anew over Obama campaign

(Reuters) - After a month in which his re-election campaign picked up momentum, hard economic realities are about to hit President Barack Obama as he takes to the road on a campaign bus trip through the Rust Belt.

Poor manufacturing data earlier this week followed by a likely weak jobless report on Friday are reminding Obama that he has a lot of work to do to convince voters he is bringing the economy back to full health.

A Supreme Court victory for Obama on healthcare and a surprise expansion of immigration laws that put Republican opponent Mitt Romney on the defensive on the issue may soon fade from memory.

"By Friday, the Supreme Court will be in the rear-view mirror and everybody will be talking about the state of the economy," said Greg Valliere, an analyst for institutional investors at Potomac Research Group.

"I think the debate on Friday will be whether the economy is still growing or whether we've hit a brick wall," he said.

U.S. manufacturing activity contracted in June for the first time in nearly three years, data showed on Monday, stark evidence of a slowing economic recovery and that Europe's debt crisis is weighing on the U.S. economy.

And the monthly jobless figures, the most closely watched economic indicator, are expected to be lackluster.

Gasoline broke into the “2s” here, but it may not be as big of a boost as the Baraqqis think.

It would be nice if the media had 1/10th of the concern about how the crappy economy impacts the people of our country. Everything is reported about how it ‘affects’ Obama. Who gives a flying F. He’s a multimillionaire.

The presstitutes don't like to acknowledge that the 1992 recession ended before Bill Clinton ever took office.

Why would a journalist ever give a pass to Obama on this economic debacle?

Nice. We're still in the $3.65 and up range here in the inland northwest. Eastern Washington is $4.00+ still.

After a month in which his re-election campaign picked up momentum,

I wonder which world she lives on. All we heard about was one "bad week" after another, and deservedly so. I hope the GOP doesn't forget "the private sector is doing fine."

I recall a moment in the 1960 election, when Kennedy was exhorting the electorate to "get America moving again." The republicans countered with some optimistic data set and the declaration, "You never had it so good."

Kennedy responded at some abandoned steel mill in Youngstown with a dose of demogoguery, a few tales of woe, and closed with the heavily sarcastic "and the republicans say, 'you never had it so good.' "

I wonder if the RNC is even smart enough to plaster this year's version of such a hanging curve.

Nah, we just haven’t gone far enough. That’s what the typical boneheaded lib is thinking anyhow.

You can bet they have not, and will not, EVER stop pushing socialism on us.

Not if Romney and the GOP have enough sense to show how OBAMACARE is going to make the economy much worse

$2.81 here in Aiken County, SC as of last Saturday. It may have gone down some more. I haven’t been in town since then.

IMHO, Romney need to ignore all the chatter and noise and buzz about nobamacare and keep pounding on the economy. This is a basic issue every American, regardless of politics or gender or race, can relate to. Been in the grocery lately?

A small giveback on what I wrote about nobamacare above. Romney needs to state absolutely with no equivocation that he will completely get rid of nobamacare as fast as he can once he takes office. Maybe he can do it through an EO. I think setting a deadline would be a good idea.

I do wonder what he’s got left to buy votes with. I don’t think things have gone as well as he had hoped with all the crap he has pulled to sucker people.

What is left? I’m glad the economy is lurching, and I think Romney is correct to stay on that message. EVERYONE can see that with their own eyes and feel the affects.

He didn’t get a bump from his illegal executive order for amnesty, healthcare, free contraceptives, lower student loan rates, low mortgage rates, TARP, HARP, etc. He keeps throwing things at the wall hoping something will stick so he doesn’t have to actually confront the fact this he is a failure as a president.

At least I hope so, and it appears that way to me when I occasionally climb out of the personal depression he has forced on me. Not dollars, but mood.
