Cost of DUI to rise for many first-time offenders [Virginia]

RICHMOND, Va. --

The cost of getting a DUI is about to get steeper for thousands of first-time offenders in Virginia.

Starting July 1, a new state law will require people convicted of their first charge of driving under the influence to drive only with an ignition interlock device, which prevents a car from being started when a driver is under the influence.

Currently, the law requires judges to impose the interlocks for first-time offenders with a blood alcohol content of 0.15 percent or higher and for second and subsequent offenses of the DUI law. The legal driving limit is 0.08 percent.

"I think the new law will take it to $10,000-plus," said Battle, who co-wrote "Virginia DUI Defense: The Law & Practice," a textbook on how to defend people charged with DUI.

Now it would be nice to equate driving with a cell phone to a DUI.

Oh please.
The cost of an attorney is free for the vast majority of DUI offenders, as they can’t afford to pay.
Certainly they won’t be able to pay any of this other stuff either, so the good people of Virginia had best get to building Jails.
Or end up paying for all of these court ordered things.
Either way the Virginians will pay.

More proof, not that we need it, that DUI is about $$$$.

The director of ‘Mothers’ Against Drunk Driving is, or was, a man. So much for advocacy.

The good news is that by late this year or early next I’ll be living in Texas and Virginia will be somebody else’s problem.

Having worked for 20 years in a large hospital's ER and having had an 18 year old niece killed by a drunk driver I firmly believe that the punishment for a first offense of DUI (booze, drugs, etc) should be a year in jail and a lifetime driving ban.Ten years for a second offense.Life for a third offense.

While we were on vacation at Williamsburg two years ago, a family member was arrested on first time DUI and thrown in the county jail overnight. Total costs of getting free of the VA DUI was over 5,000 and a year of hell.

Verdict, stay out of VA. DUI is a money making legal scam.

As long as DUI actually means being drunk (i.e., at least a 0.12 BAC), I’m with you. But at 0.08, it’s a tolling system, in disguise.

Every state. Mandated by FedGuv with highway funds held hostage.

Most of this crap is pure hysteria, BTW.

I wish I could join you, but I am tied to an underwater mortgage in this once great state. Kaine and McDonnell have really turned Virginia into a crap hole.

My son was prosecuted at .02%. Cost was over $17,000 - 2 years of constant grief and a lifetime of explanations.

killed by a drunk driver

Legal? If so, then your experience doesn't apply in Northern Virginia where illegals get away with drunken driving. That needs fixing first.

"I think the new law will take it to $10,000-plus,"

Might as well make it a million. For many occupations these days (including mine) a DUI is a career-ender. Good luck paying those $10k in fines when you're now unemployed (and practically unemployable).

One reason the debt is so high. The federal government has no business giving money to states. That is welfare! The states all have turnpikes and toll roads that should be given to up keep roads. The federal government should stop this free be program to the states and notice not one state said, “No to the welfare”.

If one state said “no”, I would move there because there might not be those stupid seatbelt laws either.

They’re going to start doing this in NJ too, first time offenders, probably at 0.08. Wonder which of our crooked politicians are going to get their palms greased as regards to the device and its installation. Ain’t technology great!
