Is Pleasure a Sin? (MoDo: The Catholic Church's War On Women)
The New York Times ^ | June 5, 2012 | MAUREEN DOWD

Posted on 06/06/2012 7:16:07 PM PDT by presidio9

It’s hard to say what is weirder:

A Sister of Mercy writing about the Kama Sutra, sexual desire and “our yearnings for pleasure.”

Or the Vatican getting so hot and bothered about the academic treatise on sexuality that the pope censures it, causing it to shoot from obscurity to the top tier of Amazon.com’s best-seller list six years after it was published.

Just the latest chapter in the Vatican’s thuggish crusade to push American nuns — and all Catholic women — back into moldy subservience.

Even for a church that moves glacially, this was classic. “Just Love: a Framework for Christian Sexual Ethics,” by Sister Margaret Farley — a 77-year-old professor emeritus at Yale’s Divinity School, a past president of the Catholic Theological Society of America and an award-winning scholar — came out in 2006.

The Vatican’s Congregation for the Doctrine of Faith, which seems as hostile to women as the Saudi Committee for the Promotion of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice, spent years pondering it, then censured it on March 30 but didn’t publicly release the statement until Monday.

The denunciation of Sister Farley’s book is based on the fact that she deals with the modern world as it is. She refuses to fall in line with a Vatican rigidly clinging to an inbred, illusory world where men rule with no backtalk from women, gays are deviants, the divorced can’t remarry, men and women can’t use contraception, masturbation is a grave disorder and celibacy is enshrined, even as a global pedophilia scandal rages.

In old-fashioned prose steeped in historical and global perspective,

Lets tstart the “Point and laugh” campaign.

Most people don’t want to put much effort into ‘protesting’ the stupidity of the left, so I’ll make it easy. When we read articles like this on ‘news’ sites like NYT and others, simply cut and paste the following to their comments section...

“The writer should be embarrassed at putting their name on such stupidity. I can only point and laugh at them.”

There’s no point trying to argue with libs. Just point out that not everyone worships the blather they commit to print.

Maureen Dowd is a loser on many levels.

Her shallow understanding of Theology is a laugh. The Catholic Church is for pleasure and happiness—it always has been and leads to great “joy”—read CS Lewis who used to be an Atheist.

Christianity just understands where “True Happiness” comes from and it isn’t from illicit sex or sitting in a corner masturbating. How sick is her thinking???? To think that such selfish nihilism brings “happiness” for more than a few minutes is stupid. And it wastes valuable time where much improvement of the mind would contribute to much more long term happiness and fulfillment.

Stoics even understood what led to a happy, fulfilled lives—and hedonism ruins it and cheapens all relationships and leads to jealousy and anger and killings, etc. Most abuse of women stems from sexual indiscretions and disloyalty.

True love takes loyalty, honor, character and agape and is what really women long for—eros is not the long term “love” that people crave-—not “sex in the city” life of 2 minute orgasms which leave women empty, feeling used, and wastes their lives and cheapens their soul.

To think that hedonism brings “pleasure” beyond 2 minutes is false. Long term hedonistic living destroys all valuable relationships and cheapens sex and all meaning of life and leaves children without dedicated parents who let their kids grow up without mature guidance and character. Their worldview is warped because they witnessed self-absorbed people who can’t even love themselves since they are empty because they are godless.

Celibacy is liberating—and much more effort can go to intellectual development and service which is what constitutes real self-worth and fulfillment. Patriarchy is NOT about men ruling women—it is about roles which make society efficient and children the most emotionally healthy. Patriarchy is what created Queen Elizabeth and Queen Victoria, etc—hardly subservient women. Women had much more power and were used a lot less cruelly before the “pill”. Now they have no worth (to liberals) and are used like toilet paper. There is no meaning to the sex act beyond their immediate “pleasure” which ends up when the male dumps her—to make the woman feel like a piece of meat. Self-esteem is crushed.

Hedonism makes women and men slaves of the Flesh—TRUE SLAVES -—and leads to other addictions—a self-absorbed lifestyle which will destroy civil societies which depend on cooperation and sacrifice. Children demand time—hedonists give the kids to the State to raise so they grow up into little hedonist automatons devoid of character and the capacity to love.

It's too much for what's left of MoDo's brain to figure out that Catholic laymen are free to say or publish anything they care to about their chosen religion, no matter how dumb. As a "religious" person, the nun has taken vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience. If the Pope, or even her immediate superior, says STFU, she can only salute and follow orders. One of the Berrigan brothers, in one of the few honorable things he ever did, actually did shut his piehole when ordered.

She is free at any time to renounce her vows, and become a "civilian" like everyone else. Then she can run her mouth on anything, but she isn't "Sister" any more. But can still try out for the excommunion squad.

Oh, that awful Catholic Church... denunciating a poor nun... is that anything like a beheading?

How can anyone justify a single article about Catholicism with all the terror perpetrated by the Religion of Peace? Have these people no shame?

Actually note that the denunciation (act of censuring publically) was only on the book, not on the nun herself.

Every-time they violate the teachings of the church, they should have to repent, penance, and then retake their vows.

Actually, it was linked to the Google News site. NYT.com is a subscriber site, so I don't bother with it. The only thing I read from NYT is the Science Times section, which I steal from my office every Wednesday.

Or we could compromise and you could just agree not to read articles that identify MoDo as the author in the subheading.

While we’re at it, we could agree not to bitch about reading articles nobody forced us to read...

Not eveyone on Planet Earth is as obsessed with f*cking as the writer.

There are a few men and women scattered around who are more interested in pure spirituality.

Not many, these days, but a few.
