Backers See Huckabee Filling VP Niche (editorial)
Real Clear Politics ^ | May 29, 2012 | Scott Conroy

If Mitt Romney's most pressing consideration in selecting a running mate is to find someone who can expand his appeal among independents or a critical demographic that remains up for grabs, several candidates would likely fit the bill better than Mike Huckabee.

But if the former Massachusetts governor instead concludes that his right flank is not as secure as it needs to be, Huckabee may be among his best options.

The winner of the 2008 Iowa caucuses remains one of the most popular and well-recognized conservatives nationwide, and his decision not to launch a second presidential run removed what might have been Romney’s toughest competitor on the road to the Republican nomination.

Thus far, most GOP strategists assume that the urgency to defeat President Obama will negate any conservatives’ thoughts about staying home in November. Romney’s primary concern over the next five months, this dominant line of thinking goes, is to make headway with the narrow slice of the electorate who can be won by either candidate.

With that in mind, Huckabee backers are quick to draw attention to the former Arkansas governor’s affable demeanor, lack of pretention, and his up-from-the-bootstraps personal story, all of which might soften Romney’s image and make the GOP ticket more relatable to blue-collar independents.

Huckabee has some assets, but conservatisim isn’t one of them, his stances on social issues aside.

Romney is a Rino. Huckabee is a RINO. Can we get one conservative on the ticket?

In the 2008 election cycle, Huckabee ranted over and over again against Mormons, since he is a Southern Baptist and they apparently have a long running grudge with Mormons. I don’t know the origins or why.

In any case, Mitt better not pick Huckabee.

I am a life-long Republican and I am already holding my nose to vote for Mitt.

I don’t know if I can squeeze tight enough to vote also for Huckabee.

This is really putting manyof us between a rock and a very hard place. We cannot vote for Obama.

This is not a good rumor.

Me to

It’s going to be very painful enough for me to vote for Mitt.

Huck, no way. That will be the final straw and I will not be voting

Huck is Romney + a gut and a Southern drawl. And okay genuine social conservatism too but he’s another Governor with a lousy record.

And he’s not the guy to embarrass Biden in the VP debate.

VP doesn’t matter in office though, only during the election or if they become President or run for President themselves in the future.

So anyone who is holding their nose for Romney but won’t do it if he picks a bad running mate is being silly. VP has no power.

Palin did lead me to more strongly support McCain but I was wrong in thinking that way.

Huckabee seems like a really nice guy, but he’s always reminded me of Gomer Pyle. Not that there’s anything wrong with Gomer.

Huckabee said mormons teach that Jesus and satin are brothers, that’s not railing about mormonism it is stating a fact.

Huckabee, Jeb Bush, Chris Christi.

Just when you think you might be able to keep the gag reflex at a point where you can force yourself to vote for Willard they float another wet noodle for VP.

The Stupid Party is becoming a parody of itself.

The author is dillusional. How will Huckabee shore up Romney’s right flank. I guess from the Stalinist left, even the RINOS are too far away to see with a telescope.
