N. Korea's west coast affected by severe drought
SEOUL, May 26 (Yonhap) -- North Korea's western coast region is experiencing severe drought that could seriously affect food production this year, a report by the communist country's state-run media said Saturday.
The (North) Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), picked up in Seoul, said that if there is no rainfall by the end of the month, the drought will be recorded as the worst since 1962.
It said from April 26 onwards, the capital city of Pyongyang received 2 millimeters of rain, while 5 millimeters fell in Haeju of South Hwanghae Province.
The KCNA added that Sinuiju, just across from the Chinese border city of Dandong, reported getting just 1 millimeter of rain in the past month.
The wire service said advanced weather forecasts indicate that little rainfall is expected in June, which can pose challenges for farmers in the region.

As a compassionate nation we will bail them out (with Obama in office, I say this with some trepidation). Our asshole and chief may side with the communists government on this one. Besides, anything we send them in the way of food, grain, etc. will go to the government and never reach the people in need.

I checked to see what average annual rainfall is for NoKo. It is only 36 inches. If this region is the “breadbasket” for the nation, then they really are in dire straits if this area endures severe drought conditions as predicted.

Then again, you don’t want them so weak that it drives them towards even more desperate and unpredictable behavior.

“the bread basket” of NK? Really? I thought the powers that be over there didn’t believe in food.. People are eating mud, grass and are skin and bones. God can’t smite that place soon enough . Thing is, the populace is so damaged from the brutality, any new leaders would likely be as bad. Just going to have to flood the whole thing like the Red Sea crashing over.
communist countries are always battered by “drought” because their own policies make it that way. North Korea has no private sector whatsoever, meaning there is no buffer. When “drought” hit in the mid-90’s there was not even a black market and millions literally starved to death.
After that one, the people learned not to trust the government. Those who trusted the government to provide for them are the ones who died off first.
Our government offered them something like 200,000 tons of food aid to cancel their nuke/missile program and they would not.
Their agricultural sector has never been too productive, they have always been getting food aid from China or other. Foreign aid ended with the collapse of the Soviet Union and the mid-90’s “drought” was the result. That is the one that killed literally millions of North Koreans.
They really are not concerned about their own people, their people are too weak to do anything about it anyways.
To try and solve this problem in situ, anyone who is able to offer 50kg of rice or equivalent is handed a month of vacation time during the farm support period. If rations amount to 600g per day then a single worker will go through 24kg of rice or corn over the course of the 40-day mobilization period; thus, giving 50kg means taking responsibility for feeding two other people, and this is enough to get an exemption from labor for oneself.

Nothing to flame there. The only solution to North Korea’s suffering is regime change. When the squeeze is put on them sufficiently, the military may act to remove the regime—or perhaps the people will though granted when you’re starving it’s difficult to mount a successful challenge to a brutish regime on the streets. That’s why I’ve always wondered if keeping the people starving was part of a deliberate strategy by the Kim parasites to keep the people too weak and too busy scrounging for sustanance to have time and energy to come for them. But I don’t know any other way other than US invasion (and we know we won’t do that) to end this disgusting regime other than starving it out. It will take some short term pain to get long term relief to the long suffering people of North Korea unfortunately.
the dead ones are the lucky ones. I don’t have a clue as to why people would even want to live another day there.
