OAKLAND -- Weeks after President Obama's announcement of support for same-sex marriage and on the eve of his latest Bay Area fundraisers, his campaign rolled out its appeal to LGBT voters Tuesday with a rallying cry from a community hero.
"This is what it takes to win an election," retired Navy Cmdr. Zoe Dunning, 48, told about a dozen volunteers Tuesday at the campaign's Northern California headquarters on Telegraph Avenue. "It takes boots on the ground, it takes people who have his back."
Dunning was the first and only openly gay service member allowed to remain on active duty during the Don't Ask Don't Tell era. A 1985 U.S. Naval Academy graduate, she came out in 1993 and survived a two-year battle to remain in the Reserve and retired in 2007.
She stood next to the president in 2010 as he signed Don't Ask Don't Tell's repeal. And, the San Franciscan said Tuesday, she was proud when the president announced his support for gay marriage May 9.
"Some people seemed surprised, but I was not -- I think I knew all along that he would eventually evolve to that position," she said. "And I think it made it easier for the LGBT community to believe him when he says he has our back." LGBT refers to the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.
Dunning reminded the volunteers that Obama signed the repeal Don't Ask Don't Tell, has expressed support for same-sex marriage rights, and has ordered his administration to stop defending the Advertisement federal Defense of Marriage Act in court; ordered the government to extend certain benefits to employees' same-sex partners; committed resources to the global war on HIV/AIDS; and acted to eliminate housing discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation.

Yea, Obastard was in danger of losing the queer and freak votes ‘til he started this campaign.
It sound like the homosexuals have Barry’s back.
LOL!
Why do they think its necessary to even bother “appealing to the LBGT voters”??
Well, he picked the right place for it.
Next stop, Massachusetts.
“It takes boots on the ground, “
Don’t you mean “pumps”?
I also will choose their delusions, and will bring their fears upon them; because when I called, none did answer; when I spake, they did not hear: but they did evil before mine eyes, and chose that in which I delighted not.
Like he was going to lose California, even without the Lavender Vote....
He was talking about the dykes.
Here in mexifornia, there’s no difference. These freaks run the place.
Oh goodie goodie gum drops/sourchasm!!! (deliberately misspelled for emphasis)
