Charles Krauthammer, the conservative columnist spoke about the use of drones for domestic spying last night.
He blasted the idea:
"A drone is a high-tech version of an old army. It ought to be used in Somalia to hunt bad guys but not in America. Yes you can say we have satellites, we have Google Street, we have everything else, but that is no reason to accept a society where you are always watched by the government.
"I would predict the first guy who uses a second amendment weapon to bring a drone down who is hovering over his house will become a folk hero."

"There was a time when a R/C Club used to get up on Sundays at the crack of dawn and fly noisy Radio Controlled Airplanes right over my house where I was trying to sleep in. Being a peaceful person who had asked the R/C/ Club to just fly the Airplanes in the other direction at least until I was awake I handled the problem just like a peaceful person would.I went to a Hobby Store and bought the most powerful R/C controller with a handful of the frequency chips that you could swap out in seconds. Each time a Radio Controlled Aircraft buzzed directly over my house I got the controller. With the swiftness of a sniper, I simply used the R/C controller by swapping out the chips until got the frequency of the buzzing airplane, took control and flew it out of site over the woods never to be found again. It only took three aircraft losses to be able to sleep in on Sundays. All peaceful. All legal. Anyone listening??

I'm guessing they probably operate on a SINGCGARS radio, which frequency hops 111 times x second. I would think if one were to be brought down, it will be done by a hacker. Given the operational altitude of these things, there's probably very little the average citizen can do, although if it's known where they're taking off and landing from, something along these lines may hae some promise, albeit a quite expensive one...

Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office north of Houston has one. Lots of cities, and I mean small cities, have them compliments of Homeland Security. The question is “who” is flying them. I doubt some deputy sheriffs have the training.
What really scares me is we’ve always thought the county sheriffs would stand with the people. Not so sure anymore. They like those toys they get from the government.

I worked at Texas Instruments in the early 80's (the inventor of semiconductors among other digital technologies). My ex military compatriots told me they could see the nose hairs of targets from their optics.

Balloons tethered at different altitudes for long periods of time, painted sky colors, design a lightweight web made from high strength fibers like Spectra. Or just dangle streamers. Something to snare a propeller.
Just do some research about barrage balloons during WW2.
But if I wanted to shoot one down I might design a super air cannon flak gun loaded with paint balls, paint the optics at the very least. Do a search on the Punkin Chunkin air cannons, any redneck with a truck, a scrap yard and a welder can make one.

There are perfectly legitimate reasons to use drones. I can think of a specific situation in my county in which the use of a drone ended a standoff with an estranged husband who had shot and wounded a police officer after he failed to kill his wife and then barricaded himself in his wife's property after she escaped. At the time I was asked not to report on the use of the technology since it was not yet widely known what our forces were doing in Iraq and Afghanistan with high-tech surveillance equipment, but that's now widespread public knowledge.
There are also search-and-rescue situations where virtually everyone would believe drones are good because they save lives.
If you can see it from a plane, you can see it from a drone, and there's no legal barrier to using one.
After seeing just a small portion of the surveillance technology available to the federal government used in that shooter standoff situation, I think it's fair to say that their capabilities are far greater than what our enemies know.
Of course, not all things which are legal are a good idea and I share the concerns of a number of people on this thread about government surveillance. This is question of what the government **SHOULD** be doing, not what it legally **CAN** be doing.
I like the idea of using old technology to thwart overflights by these intruders...
The Brits had it right idea during the Blitz back in the day...
Just tie up a bunch of balloons with lightweight cables or even heavy fishing tackle line...
Should do the trick...
Then all you guys with the heavy artillery can save a little ammo in the mean time...

Get an IR camera, set it in front of a board with heat shield installed on it, let someone walk behind the board and check to see if the camera can see the heat signature.
*But I’ve heard that radiant barrier material lessens the life of your shingles, due to the heat reflection/ redirection.
Unfortunately, my little girl is not yet old enough to provide me with sufficient excuse for playing with such cool toys, so I don't know. ;o)

I’ve heard the “reduced shingle life” issue, but I don’t think that’s really a problem - they get pretty hot up there anyway. The problem is when that heat seeps down through your attic, your ceiling, and your house. Preventing that increases comfort and lowers cooling costs.
And, if you want to cool your shingles - water them.

A person could in its simplest form just have a sprinkler system on the roof to chill it or better yet for the serious shielding get one of those tractor trailer reefer units, lay a grid of PEX tubing on your roof, lay another layer of OSB, tarpaper roofing paper or whatever your roof is.
Basically you are building a chilled roof that would be near freezing.
Its not as hard as you think, I build hydronic heated floors in my house, most of the stuff comes from Lowes. With a little creativity and a heat exchanger I can create a thermal shield. Same can be done with the walls.
the goal is actually not to do this on your whole house but a more discreet building like a shop, up in Alaska the pot growers use this reverse hydronic idea to shield the roof from overhead flights of aircraft with thermal scanners.
I intend to install a drip irrigation system along the roof ridge. The BTUs required to heat water from 55/60 deg to evaporation are incredible if you do the math.
And those are BTUs that your $AC doesn’t have to handle.

Yes, they can. It uses mutliple frequencies, actually lots of frequencies, that act like a radar. One frequency will make it through drywall and bounce off metal objects while another frequency can make it through drywall and bounce off wood. Another frequency can make it through brick and do the same. Etc, etc, etc. So, lots of frequencies all getting through various materials and bouncing off various materials makes for a rather impressive image when assembling all those frequencies together.
We have had satellites with that capability for a number of years now and the technology has made it into nearly handheld sized devices. Ground vehicles and airborne platforms are already in the US and operating.

Not possible. Look up ‘frequency hopping”. Their communications can hop frequencies every pulse and the frequency range is extremely wide. The signal is also in the grass already so don’t even hope to overpower it, it doesn’t operate on that level of power. The system also detects jamming signals and keeps its frequency hopping out of that range. A VERY powerful transmitter capable of extremely wideband transmissions can jam that type of signal but only ship and ground based systems have ever been successful at it. They can pulse in excess of 100 megawatts over 100 MHz at a time for a duration of over 10ms. Even then the jamming isn’t always successful. No space or airborne platform has yet to accomplish such a feat. Airborne platforms have jammed only in very short ranges such as 3-5 miles, past that and the pwoer simply falls off too quickly.

Done. Single system using simple delay logic. What bounces off of clothing doesn’t bounce 100% of the signal back so when it penetrates a human body it strikes the other side of the clothing and comes back again, much weaker but detectable. Only metal objects require multidimensional scanning for high resolutions but even then using scatter and collect technologies a 3D image is still possible with a single scanner, just not at higher resolutions.

Civilian contractors under supervision of the Air Force typically. The FAA monitors the operation for civil aviation authority regulatory compliance but they ar enot directing the operation in any way.
Do that, and you better have something covert and nefarious going on to afford the fuel and maintenance you'll spend not to mention in Cal. it'll have to be CARB certified.
