Concealed gun survey 'bought and paid for by a radical gun-control group'(MI)

A poll that found Michigan voters oppose allowing concealed handguns in schools and other places where they are now banned is “suspicious,” said the spokesman for a lawmaker pushing the change.

“In poll after poll, Michiganders strongly support the rights of law-abiding gun owners to protect themselves wherever they have a legal right to be,” said Ryan Mitchell, communication director for state Sen. Mike Green, R-Mayville.

“This particular survey was bought and paid for by a radical gun-control group and so its results are suspicious.”

But the pollster who conducted the survey defended the findings and said Green’s efforts run counter to majority opinion.

“I think Sen. Green may have forgotten which state he represents,” said Bernie Porn, president of EPIC-MRA in Lansing. “He may be laboring under the impression that he represents the state of Texas.” PROPOSED CHANGES TO MIGHIGAN’S CONCEALED HANDGUN LAW

The proposed overhaul of Michigan’s concealed weapons law would:

• Establish a “shall issue” exemption allowing highly trained permit holders to carry guns in pistol-free zones. An extra nine hours of training and 162 more rounds fired at the range would be required beyond current basic requirements.

• Require firing-range time for basic applicants include 98 rounds, as opposed to 30 now.

• Eliminate county gun boards, now comprised of state police, sheriffs, clerks and prosecutors or firearms instructors.

• Shift permit approvals to sheriffs, whose departments already handle background checks. County clerks would still process applications.

• Require licenses be approved within 45 days or a temporary license must be issued.

• Counties could no longer charge extra money beyond the $105 application fee for taking photos, laminating, and other add-ons.

The poll of 600 likely voters, released last week, found 72 percent oppose allowing concealed guns in college classrooms, bars and other places - 63 percent strongly so. Twenty-five percent favored the effort. Done over four days ending April 3, the poll has a margin of error of 4 percentage points.

Perhaps more surprisingly, in the nearly one in five households where at least one member had a concealed weapons permit, 53 percent of respondents opposed the bill.

The survey was commissioned by the New York-based Campaign to Keep Guns off Campus.

“This group should instead focus its resources against the very real violence being perpetrated against students and staff on college campuses every day by criminals who ignore the law and carry firearms illegally,” Mitchell said.

Green’s bill would lift the decade-old ban on concealed pistols in certain zones if a permit holder receives additional firearms training. It passed the Senate natural resources committee last month. A full vote is pending in the Senate.

"Thousands of voters have contacted our office about SB 59 and it has been overwhelmingly positive,” Mitchell said.

Porn said his company has conducted similar surveys on the issue in the past, using similar wording.

“Sen. Green is just trying to disparage an accurate reflection of public perception, which is also is accurate in that concealed weapon holders are split on the issue as well,” he said.

The question asked in the survey was:

"Current Michigan law allows people with a concealed weapons permit to carry their handguns nearly everywhere, but the law has some exceptions. A bill now before the Michigan Legislature would, for the first time, allow individuals who have a permit to carry a concealed handgun to carry it in schools or on school property, day care centers, sports arenas or stadiums, bars and taverns, hospitals and college dormitories or classrooms. Based on what you know about this issue, do you favor or oppose the proposal to allow concealed handguns to be carried anywhere?"

Notice that the question gathers together all people who oppose carrying a concealed handgun anywhere, so anyone who would think that there is anyplace where a handgun should not be carried is gathered together in the one oppositional group.

“I think Sen. Green may have forgotten which state he represents,” said Bernie Porn, president of EPIC-MRA in Lansing.
“He may be laboring under the impression that he represents the state of Texas.”

Those two comments, my friends, is prima facie evidence of bias.

My girls had to sing at a Latin mass at a parish in Detroit, across from the Eastern Market. During the Prayers of the Faithful, this congregation prayed that the law against guns in church would stand. I nearly fell out of the pew. Of all places, this parish needs armed ushers.

Didn’t the SC rule gun bans are unconstitutional?
