Do homophobic people actually fear their own unconscious feelings? A new study suggests that people who repress their own sexual attraction to the same sex are more likely to express hostility towards gays.
"In many cases these are people who are at war with themselves and they are turning this internal conflict outward," study co-author Dr. Richard Ryan, professor of psychology at the University of Rochester, said in a university written statement.
In four separate experiments conducted in the U.S. and in Germany, each involving an average of 160 college students, researchers attempted to measure any differences between what people say about their sexual orientation and how they actually react. Their findings are published in the April issue of the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology.
For one experiment, researchers used word and picture tests to subliminally prime participants with either the word "me" or "others," and then asking them to place the words and images into "gay" or "straight" categories. A second experiment had participants browse same-sex or opposite-sex photos to test implicit - or unconscious - same-sex attraction. Other experiments measured participants' levels of homophobia through questionnaires or asked about participants' upbringings and their parents' perspectives.
All together, the study showed that participants with parents accepting of homosexuality were more open and aware of their implicit sexual orientation, while those with authoritative parents were more likely to deny their implicit sexual orientation. The researchers found participants who said they were heterosexual but revealed different reactions on their implicit tests were more likely to act with hostility toward gay people.
"In a predominately heterosexual society, 'know thyself' can be a challenge for many gay individuals. But in controlling and homophobic homes, embracing a minority sexual orientation can be terrifying," study co-author Dr. Netta Weinstein,

Somebody has been watching too much Sesame Street.
Or it might be a recognition that deviants are creepy.
it might also be the mark of a real man.
Would that also explain the hostility of gays towards hetrosexuals?
Apparently I have a secret desire to be liberal as well.
Homophobia - “A perfectly natural fear of behavior that is patently unnatural.”
correction: not “-phobia.” -disdain.
Claim you like gays => you’re gay.
Claim you don’t like gays => you’re gay.
Claim you’re indifferent => definitely gay.
"Sometimes a cigar is just ... something you don't need to keep waving in my face."
So do the ranting loons on the left really love and want to be conservatives, then?
There is no such mental disease as “homophobia”, and no such medical condition as “homophobic”.
Its all just Marxist BS, propaganda and fraud based social engineering, and I’m surprised to see worthless crap like this posted on FR.
What the hell is homophobia? Phobia suggests fear of. I’m not the least bit fearful of the disgusting freaks
Sure, it (homosexuality) kind of seems ok after emerging out of 400 years of puritanical background. Give it another 100 years or so and you will see the homosexuals doing the same stuff that was done in Sodom and Gomorrah and in Greece in the ancient times.
Men who think too much about homosexuality are not normal. Just sayin
Gays Making Accusations of Homophobia May Indicate Their Shame
What a startling revelation! /sarc
Does this mean I also have a secret desire to dine on putrid roadkill?
Why can’t these retards just leave their doors closed?
Gee...I thought it was “impossible” for Gay people to act straight? Which is it??
It just occured to me the Muhammed might actually BE God’s “Messenger.”
ML/NJ
Homophobia is a made up word.
I know of no one who fears homos. Most of us just disagree morally with their lifestyle actions.
Homorepulsion, perhaps.
Bet’cha two bucks this was a gay-sponsored study. The nerve. Making real mean begin to doubt their manlineth.
So I guess every liberal secretly desires to be a conservative by this article’s logic?
And dogs, do dogs have a secret desire to be cats, and vice versa?
Do you know why you REALLY abhor the idea of clapping your scrotum between two very heavy, very cold bricks?
Because inwardly you YEARN to do exactly THAT, you see...?!
AHA..! Now you see how clever I am, yesss...?!
I have a natural aversion to cannibalism, so does this make me Cannibal-phobic too?
No shi# Elmo, or South Park.
Any normal straight person has a natural revulsion to the sicko behavior of homos, as well as that of pedophiles, and other forms of sexual deviancy.
Funny ‘logic’. Homosexuals hate people who hate them in return and call them every name in the book plus ostracize them...so wouldn’t it be correct that gay people are in denial to being attracted normally to the opposite sex?
Oh, yeah? Well how about this. I think heterophobes are ascared to admit they know nobody of the opposite sex is attracted to them.
Degenerate minds have infected every layer of society, and have set up house in the Psychology community.
Male butts don’t drive me nuts!
...but female butts do!

I refer you now to that great philosopher of the last part of the 20th century: Andrew Dice Clay. His words on the subject are unprintable on this family forum, but the logic is indisputable. Indeed, a giant of his time.
So Communists are really Conservatives that can’t acknowledge their inner Free Market?
There have always been people who have had problems with the opposite sex, and while I dislike Freud in general, I think he identified this correctly: these people are immature, through no fault of their own, and their emotional development has been stopped at a certain phase as a result of outside influences.
For example, most girls go through a very intense "best friend" phase that is then transformed into a heterosexual focus, assuming their parental and other family relationships are healthy. Sometimes they're not...and a lot of these girls will never move beyond their 12 yr old phase. The phase becomes permanent, and they are then described as lesbians, which unfortunately now will be a title they will adopt with great delight because the press will love them for it. Still, they shouldn't be hated by the rest of us but should be treated with kindness, like anybody suffering from an emotional disorder.
It's when people start to crow and define themselves as "gay" as a permanent description that most of the rest of the population bails on them. Which is perfectly fine.
LOL exactly. I work in W Hollywood and they pretty much hate everyone conservative and right-wing. I know..I’ve gotten threats before but all I say is “are you going to hit me with your purse?”
LOL!
Nice touche’!
Anyone ever notice that most Liberal studies end up confirming Liberal bias? Anyone? Ferris?
And I, for one, am suprised to learn that there are FR stormtroopers running around making people click on threads they don't want to read. Thank God they left so you could share with the world your thoughts about how worthless it all was for you.
First they invent the term “homophobia”, to suggest “an irrational fear”.
Then the set about to explain the “fear”.
How ridiculous!
Any serious attempt to label the primary reaction, would include the latin term for “disgust”.
Homodisgustus?

written by a HOMO no doubt.
Let me make one thing perfectly clear. I do not hate homosexuals.
I never knew I was homophobic until my son told me he was gay.
Now, I don’t think I was judgmental, other than stating my belief that I thought it was immoral and wrong. The I stated facts on how gay men seem to die sooner than non-gay men.
I’ve got a label I have to live with. I don’t care about my label. I’m concerned with a lifestyle my son won’t live long with.
Whatever it takes to sell the homosexual agenda... Truth is, as experienced by most heterosexuals, homophobia isn’t phobia at all, just extreme disgust at the thought of homosexual sex. It’s no different than numerous other things people find disgusting, and like most those things, it doesn’t mean people want to do it. What this study really shows is that homosexuals and those promoting their agenda are afraid (phobic) of people who don’t validate their sexual perversion.
Gay studies show everyone is just dying to sexually engage with them, especially the ones to tell them to take a hike. People who sexually reject them are only saying that because they really want it, you see.
Did CBS bother to interview Larry Sinclair?
