Minus the unfortunate sports metaphor, I think Jesse Jackson has it right:
"Let's not forget that Mr. Zimmerman represents a first down, not a touchdown -- the beginning of a process. But far beyond him, the victory is not in how long he stays in jail; the victory is in repealing these draconian, Stand Your Ground, self-defense, vigilante laws," Jackson told reporters along with others attending a church conference. "These laws incentivize vigilantism, take-the-law-into-your-own hands, kill or be killed. That's beneath the civility of a great nation."
If you have a moment it's worth taking a listen to the Joe Horn 911 tape in Texas. Horn spotted two burglars breaking into a neighbors house and called 911. The operator tells horn the police are on their way. Horn then explains that the law has changed (which it had) and that he was fully empowered to go out and kill the burglars. He then did exactly that.
It's worth noting that, as in the Trayvon Martin, case the law's authors argued it had been mis-applied:
In his 911 call, Horn cited a newly enacted Texas law, the "castle doctrine," which authorizes the use of deadly force during a home invasion.
But Sen. Jeff Wentworth, who wrote the law, said it did not apply to Horn's case. "It was not an issue in this case other than him saying incorrectly that he understood it to mean he could protect his neighbor's property," said Wentworth, R-San Antonio.
He said the castle doctrine simply didn't apply because, although the burglars were running across Horn's lawn, Horn's home wasn't under siege -- his neighbor's home was.
"It comes from the saying 'A man's home is his castle,' " Wentworth said. "But this wasn't his castle."

There are a few items of sanity way down the page, but most of them simply assume that George Zimmerman simply gunned down an innocent Trayvon Martin.
Clearly, the MSM is able to implant its message firmly into many people's minds.
Gotta wonder about writers who so clearly empathize with thieves, creepers and burglers.
“Let’s not forget that Mr. Zimmerman represents a first down, not a touchdown...”
It is not a game, Jesse. People are dying in your city every week because they are powerless against others who wish them harm and who are willing to kill at the drop of a hat.
Go home and solve your own city’s probems (1 weekend in chicago = 39 shot, 13 dead) and then get back to us.
Ta-Nehisi Coates is one of those people who would look like Obuma’s son if he fell from Farrakhan’s mother ship and bounced.
It's not just the MSM that wants to restart this case from the supposition that Martin was a 12 yr old angel the Florida special prosecutor Angela Corey has "requested" Sanford remove all records pertaining to the case. That wouldn't be because all of it points to an innocent Zimmerman would it.
I think she was asking that all the records be removed from the public eye before the trial.
All the records will be available to the defense.
The problem is that the MSM has already convicted George Zimmerman, and this removes much of the possibility for his supporters to rebut the media onslaught.
Too late for that. Fortunately all been copied many times over on several websites.
Those files were all in the public domain so it's a safe bet the defense wont have to wait for discovery.
Maybe you are less skeptical than I. Odd that all through hers, and all other investigations, the files presented no problem. After hearing her affidavit, it's obvious why she had those files removed.
Methinks Jesse doesn’t understand what the word “draconian” means.
Now that Zimmerman appears to be a “not so white” Hispanic I think the media will move on.
And as far as the Trayvon incident leading to repeal of self-defense laws, is Jack(ass)son saying that because of this shooting, we should no longer have a right to self-defense? Good luck with that one, Jessuh.
...and I'm not going to waste a single chance or opportunity to take advantage of a situation, or the people involved, to get rid of these laws.
The cat's out of the bag now.
For years white people have been educated and pacified out of bigotry and racism, until the left’s cause of social justice doesn’t have much social injustice to resist. Trayvon type ordeals are all that keep the race baiters from the door of irrelevance. Meanwhile blacks and non-white Hispanics have been getting radicalized, and turned into violent militants, soldiers of the leftist cause, the bigger cause of Communism, the utopia of social justice. Gun toting white people must give the radicals nightmares.
If they get enough of the public to believe their version, it will be hard to find 12 genuinely unbiased jurors. If, in spite of that, Zimmerman is acquitted, riots are more likely because everyone will "know" that he is guilty.
I think you're partially right. I think they're trying to remove that right for WHITE people. However, you'll never hear one of them complaining when a black person shoots a white person who is attacking them.
Like that ever happens anyway ...
If the choice is “kill or be killed” Jesse is trying to take away the first option. That just leaves “be killed”
I find it rediculous that nobody seems to care about it when a black person is killed by another black person.
As for the media, they keep twisting the story just about every time to make it look like some pretty saint was a helpless victim, when dodging details that are really important for just about anyone.
George Zimmerman is likely going to get manslaughter.
However, no one seems to note at the MSM that Martin was practicing reckless behavior that put himself in danger. The kind of behavior that my parents, when I was growing up, would put me through a living hell if they found out I was doing it. Which also raises questions as to what his parents/guardians knew, or cared, about what Martin was doing. Again, while Zimmerman is likely to get flack, there’s plenty of issues about how Martin was putting himself at serious risk before he got it, that plenty of kids should get a clue and not be engaged in.
Again, the problem I have with plenty of these so-called “hate crimes” the MSM talks about is that they aren’t the cut-and-dry issues the media often makes them out to be, quite often the “victim” was being a little reckless, putting himself at risk of getting attacked if not worse by really dangerous people out there. Not to pardon the killer, but sometimes the victim wasn’t all that much of a saint either.
I simply cannot take seriously, someone named “Ta-Nehisi”.
