Voice forensics experts cast doubt on Orlando Sentinel analysis of Trayvon Martin 911 tape
The Daily Caller ^ | April 6, 2012 | Chuck Rudd

Voice recognition experts who spoke to The Daily Caller questioned the methodology and conclusions of a voice-identification analysis published by the Orlando Sentinel on March 31.

Using two different forensic methods, the Sentinel’s chosen authorities determined that a scream heard in the background of a widely aired 911 call was not that of George Zimmerman, the man who fatally shot 17-year-old Trayvon Martin on Feb. 26

A police recording of the call captured part of the struggle that ended Martin’s life.

The Sentinel’s reporting has landed a blow against Zimmerman’s self-defense claims, suggesting that it was Martin, not Zimmerman, who shouted for help before the fatal shot struck the teenager in the chest.

Frankly, I'm surprised the newser nitwits at the Orlando paper haven't yet hired the one expert from Florida who can provide the answers they want.

Not sure of the sources, but a commenter on a blog wrote some background on the “forensics expert”, Tom Owen:

“The Self-Refuting Expert Witness The Orlando Sentinel Is Touting”

...”Tom Owen. Is he really a “forensics expert?”
Well, no. He has a B.A. in History, not forensics.

...Well, but surely he’s worked for the FBI or CIA as a forensics examiner?
No, but he did work for the New York Public Library in charge of their Rogers and Hammerstein archive.

But surely he’s written some books about forensics that the FBI and CIA use, right?
No, but he has written extensively about the banjo and did a coloring book:...

But surely he’s a member of the American Board of Recorded Evidence?
Yes, but he and his wife run the Board. He’s the chairman, and she’s a board member. The Board is run out of a weight-loss clinic in Springfield, Missouri along with a bunch of other dubious “boards,” “colleges” and “Institutes.”...

The MSM will completely ignore this. They got their incendiary headline with their bought and paid for pseudo-expert. They're not about to do anything to refute it.

Last paragraph in the article:

Wayman fired back in a later email exchange. “There is no accepted standard regarding metrics for voice comparisons,” he insisted, “either if done forensically or using automated comparison software.” Read more: http://dailycaller.com/2012/04/06/voice-forensics-experts-cast-doubt-on-orlando-sentinel-analysis-of-trayvon-martin-911-tape/#ixzz1rNsMNDzb

Are these the same “experts” who declared last week that “anyone can tell that’s a teens voice.”

Well...isn't that interesting.

From the article...

Now, let's examine the software they used to perform their analysis. How good is it?

Well, given two KNOWN samples of speech by President Richard M. Nixon, the software only matched two recordings to a 86% match.

Remember, Mr. Owen said he'd expect a 90% match before he concluded that the voices were identical.

The comments to the article are further enlightening.

I guess Matin, who was on top of Zimmerman beating him, got tired and called out for help?

msnbc’s To Catch a PERP, uses an adult female that has a voice that sounds like a”teenager”, in their setups.

A good defense attorney would be able to find experts to poke all kinds of holes in the two Sentinel experts’ testimony. That’s one way good defense attorneys create reasonable doubt.

I would expect the state prosecutor to have more competent-sounding voice experts, however.

I saw one of the eye witnesses interviewed by Ashley Banfield on CNN yesterday or Thursday.

I wasn't too impressed. She was vague and I don't think that her view was that good due to the rain and the falling darkness.

Again, I think that a good defense attorney could get her mixed up unless the DA firms up her testimony.

Remember the OJ case? OJ had the money to buy nearly the best defense available. If Zimmerman comes up with anything close, the prosecutor may have problems.

I'm trying to look at this and think about how it might look at trial.

I feel bad that Martin is dead. He was 17, and it looks like he had real relationships with both his parents although they were divorced. That gave him a good chance to live a productive life despite some relatively minor stupid teenager behavior.

I'm not yet ready to draw any conclusion on what I think actually happened between Martin and Zimmerman. I think that the media has botched their coverage badly, and since the investigators aren't talking, it's hard to know what they have now or will uncover soon. I did go to law school a long time ago, but I have never practiced criminal law. Nonetheless, I think that those three years of law school really does influence my thinking on these things.

I am very concerned that if Zimmerman is not convicted of at least manslaughter, we may return to the bad old days of the ‘60s. I grew up in Michigan, and I remember a lot about the Detroit riots. Actually, there were riots in nearly every smaller industrial city in the state at the same time. It was an awful time, and I really do not want a replay. However, I don't want to see Zimmerman railroaded into a conviction just to keep bad things from happening. This is just a very, very bad situation all around, and just a handful of nut jobs on either side could start a lot of trouble.

Couple of things. Cboldt did quite a bit of research last night and this morning. It appears the young lady in the Banfield interview had already been interviewed by Anderson Cooper.(fave her name then)

She was upset because she was not getting the attention she wanted first from LEO and then from media.

I suggest she was up on something, The Um..ah like uh sounded a bit Valley girlish. She wold be torn apart in cross exam, kept changing her story....Drama queen?????

The neighbor who wanted to be called John (as in John Doe) was a much better witness. First, he was closer, saw incident at the beginning of the scuffle, and was close enough to describe both in details. Suspect he has had some training in ID techniques.

Either the brother or father of George when interviewed last week said that the police had some evidence that had not been released, happened between the time George hung up and the first punch. They said it would confirm George's story.

As to the parents, don't think they were ever married. From my experience they were both in denial. Have some experience in the area. My son too had been influenced by drug culture. If I had not been on top of things and aware of the “hints” he too could have been dead by eighteen. Instead he put himself into treatment. Thank God for AlANON and their support

The fact that the majority of the pictures they released say not they want to remember Tray from his happy innocent time of life. OTOH maybe weren't even aware of how far he had been pulled into the “thug” life. Kids are very manipulative when dealing with two separated parents, even in the best of circumstances.

Will be surprised if George is charged with anything. Hope his lawyers are prepared to file multiple lawsuits.
