Here is a transcript of the exchange from today. You can view the full transcript here.
QUESTION: Yesterday there was a bit of a kerfuffle over an announcement that was made by the Department about the travel of your boss.
MS. NULAND: Yes.
QUESTION: Is it the State Departments position that Jerusalem is not part of Israel?
MS. NULAND: Well, you know that our position on Jerusalem has not changed. The first Media Note was issued in error without appropriate clearances. We reissued the note to make clear that Under Secretary Acting Under Secretary for R, Kathy Stephens, will be traveling to Algiers, Doha, Amman, Tel Aviv, and Jerusalem. With regard to our Jerusalem policy, its a permanent status issue; its got to be resolved through negotiations between the parties.
QUESTION: Is it the view of the United States that Jerusalem is the capital of Israel, notwithstanding the question about the Embassy, the location of the U.S. Embassy?
MS. NULAND: We are not going to prejudge the outcome of those negotiations, including the final status of Jerusalem.
QUESTION: Does that mean that you do not regard Jerusalem as the capital of Israel?
MS. NULAND: Jerusalem is a permanent status issue; its got to be resolved through negotiations.
QUESTION: That seems to suggest that you do not regard Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. Is that correct or not?
MS. NULAND: I have just spoken to this issue --
QUESTION: No, no. But --
MS. NULAND: -- and I have nothing further to say on it.
QUESTION: Youve spoken to the issue but didnt answer the question, and I think theres a lot of people out there who are interested in hearing a real answer and not saying and not trying to duck and say that this has got to be resolved by negotiations between the two sides.
MS. NULAND: That is our --
QUESTION: What is the capital of Israel?
MS. NULAND: Our policy with regard to Jerusalem is it has to be solved through negotiations. Thats all I have to say on this issue.
QUESTION: What is the capital of Israel?
MS. NULAND: Our Embassy, as you know, is located in Tel Aviv.
QUESTION: So does that mean that you regard Tel Aviv as the capital of Israel?
MS. NULAND: The issue on Jerusalem has to be settled through negotiations.
Lalit, thank you.
QUESTION: Change of subject?
MS. NULAND: Yeah. Say again?
QUESTION: Change of subject?
MS. NULAND: Yeah.
And this surprises who?
The question should have been, “Does the state department recognize Israel’s existence?”
She should be horse whipped for that little
performance, disgusting.
“She should be horse whipped for that little
performance, disgusting.”
Don’t horse whip the messenger. She is only saying what she is told to say. Although, I’m sure she agrees with the statements.
She probably would have answered in the affirmative
if the question had been,” What is the capital of
Palestine?”.
The solution is no nominate and elect Newt Gingrich. He will move the U.S. Embassy to Jerusalem, period, end of debate.
If the Muslims don’t like it, to Hell with’em.
Jerusalem has been the capitol of Israel
longer than the US has existed.
Shame on the State Dept for its continuing
hatred of Israel and Jews.
The murderer of a handicapped Jew is idolized
but the capitol of Israel is ignored.
“The solution is no nominate and elect Newt Gingrich...”
Like I said. The only way this is remotely possible is via brokered convention. Do you really think this is going to happen? I’d love to see this, really. But I have to live in the real world. It has been quite obvious, for months now, that Romney has been appointed to be the loser this time around. Newt strikes fear in the establishment’s heart.
“Newt strikes fear in the establishments heart.”
Romney is a Republican pretender, as he is actually a liberal Democrat.
Yes, Newt scares the establishment. I’ve been saying since late last Novemeber that Newt Gingrich is the only person who will stop the gravy train in Washington, D.C. He has said that it is broken and he intends to fix it. No wonder Capital Hill is pooping in their silk panties at the thought of him running the government!
Take cheer, for though it looks like a Romney sure-thing, it isn’t over until the balloon drop at the Tampa convention in August.
Unfortunately, this nonsense isn’t a new Obama thing. It is longstanding policy
There was actually legislation, passed during the GW Bush administration, that required the USA to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, move the embassy etc. Bush made a “signing statement” that said he regarded the law as advice only, and kept on with business as usual.
Candidate Obama brazenly lied (to folks who wanted to be lied to) that he regarded Jerusalem as the “eternal undivided capital of Israel. Once in office, however, that notion was quickly discarded.
Well now, it looks as the state dep’t just poked the God of Israel in the eye...What arrogance.
George W. Bush betrayed Israel too. When Congress in 2002 passed a law mandating that passports of U.S. citizens born in Jerusalem said “ISRAEL”, and Bush wrote an Obama-style signing statement saying he would refuse to enforce that provision. Prick.
The list, Ping
Let me know if you would like to be on or off the ping list
ping for later.
Thanks markedmannerf.
What’s the deal here? Bush didn’t want to recognize Jerusalem as part of Israel? And when we passed a law to do so, Bush reneged to sign it? I know I’m missing something here, what is it. Why would we need a law for something as obvious as that? And what’s his refusal about?
>elect Newt Gingrich. He will move the U.S. Embassy to Jerusalem,<
Yes well George W. Bush said the same thing, when he was running for President, but it was words to get elected. There isn’t anyone, either running for or in public office going to do that because every Muslim country on this planet will try to eradicate us and Israel.
“...every Muslim country on this planet will try to eradicate us and Israel.”
ROFLOL!!!!
Lil Flower, they’re already trying to do that.
Thanks to Obama, most of the nations in North Africa have destroyed their modern economies and gone backwards in time 300-years! Muslims there in the near future will be faced with the challenge of just getting enough to eat.
Oh I totally agree with what you’re saying, its our so called, pff, “leaders,” who are deathly afraid of upsetting the delicate muslim peoples.
My God I am so sick of cowards.
