France is to ban radical Muslim preachers from entering the country as part of a crackdown after shootings by an al Qaeda-inspired gunman in Toulouse, President Nicolas Sarkozy said today.
The President said he would block the entry of some imams invited to an Islamic conference next month, organised by the Union of French Islamic Organisations (UOIF).
The UOIF, one of three Muslim federations in France, is regarded as close to Egypt's Islamist Muslim Brotherhood.
'I have clearly indicated that there certain people who have been invited to this congress who are not welcome on French soil,' Mr Sarkozy told France Info radio.
The crackdown follows the murder of seven people in Toulouse by Islamic extremist Mohammed Merah, 23.
The gunman shot down a Rabbi, three children and three soldiers in three separate attacks before being shot dead at the end of 32-hour police siege.
Following the shootings last week, Mr Sarkozy has announced plans to punish those viewing websites advocating Islamic extremism and going abroad for indoctrination or terrorist training.

Stay informed about the French elections in detail.
It appears that the French may be wising up. Lets just pray that it’s not already too late.
FRENCH ELECTION UPDATE
FIRST ROUND APRIL 22
SARKOZY 28.5%
HOLLANDE 27%
In rolling polls, Sarko continues to inch up against Hollande who is lising ground to the far left Jean-Luc Melanchon.
Marine Le Pen has lost ground as well, now running fourth after Melanchon.
Sarko’s strong, statesmanlike handling of the terrorist attack, and his determination to root out the cause, radical Islam, has given him a boost.
He has been helped a lot by the weakness of his opponent, François Hollande, a bureaucrat with no elective or real world experience. His latest weak, ostrich like response to the horrific attacks by Al Qaida in France show what a danger he is to France, and to the West.
FINALLY! Good on Sarko. The rest of the west should take a lesson from him.
I read something the other day that said immigration from Muslim countries was banned for years until Bill Clinton changed that.
We need to just STOP all immigration RIGHT NOW. Legal and illegal. We need to have a big fat moratorium on immigration.
Once we’ve got the influx stopped we can reconsider whom to admit.
Islam isn't a religion but a whole pseudo-theocratic system which has, as part of its main tenets, the killing of nonbelievers.
That is unconscionable and should not be tolerated in Western nations.
The french, can they all lose?
BHO will try to bring this on us too.
Ban a couple until after the elections, most likely.
It's just window dressing. This may ban like 5 Imams. They should be deporting thousands, filling 747s round the clock.
It’s a start!
Go back to the earlier, more selective immigration requirements. Speak English, have visible means of support, and have a sponsor.
Not surprised Sarkosy got a boost...but remains to be seen how the muslims in his country will react to this....it’s a fine line to walk....but if France is going to begin taking care of the problems they’re having with the muslim population then they have to start somewhere.
Good for Sarkosy on this move....I just hope he will stay with it.
If the US doesn’t stop the infilitration it will fast become to late.....and people will die for that...they already are. Fort hood comes to mind.
But until the French people speak up it’s not going to happen.....
Thank you Mr. Sarkozy.
I only wish my country would wise up and do the same thing.
After begging for her life, eight year old Miriam Monsonego was shot in the head last week by a muslim. The vile perpetrator of this atrocity even filmed the execution of the little blonde French child.
I wish it would happen in Australia.
no, we should continue to have legal immigration. Legal immigrants who want to become Americans and have the same beliefs as we do are welcome. Remember that we are a nation of immigrants
Thanks Cincinna. A little bit of the close the barn door after the horse is gone, and probably strictly a campaign maneuver, but it’s more than we get out of Zero here in the US.
“...we should continue to have legal immigration.”
I think we can resume having legal immigration at some point, but I also think a lot of the problems we have now are the result of changes made to the laws regarding legal immigrants in the 60s.
If you watch the local news for NYC you notice that when ordinary people are interviewed (whether because of some crime, or fire, or the weather, or just man-in-the-street things) that almost all of them are foreigners.
It doesn’t matter what color they are, or how old they are, or where in the city they live. I could swear no native born Americans live in NYC anymore, and there are very few in Hudson County, NJ either. (I’m exagerrating, obviously, but this is how it seems.)
We let people bring over too many family members, we have a lottery system that treats immigration to America as some kind of lucky prize, we restrict immigration of the most qualified people and put no real restrictions on the least skilled and educated people who come here to do menial labor.
Of course there would still be SOME immigration, via marriage, adoption, and of highly skilled workers, SOME refugess, defectors, etc.
But I think the slackness in our legal system contributes to the slackness in general enforcement.
Our economy stinks, our lowest skilled workers are suffering and we need to just say STOP!
Any body in the legal pipeline can continue to pursue their case. We need to focus on closing the border, restricting and enforcing “tourist” and student visas (that is to say making sure people leave and restricting visitors from unfriendly countries), ending bi-lingual education.
Meanwhile we re-write the laws, permit the various states to act (Arizona) or not (California) against their illegal populations.
After a few years, let’s see where we stand. Then we can loosen things up, IF we, the people, decide it is in OUR best interest.
For the record 2 of my grandparents were born in Europe.
I was very pro-immigration for many years, basically an open-borders type person as long as you didn’t go on welfare.
That changed on 9/11/2001 and I have only become more strongly anti-immgrant since that time, as I’ve learned more about the capricious and arbitrary morass we are in and seen how illegals basically get a “break the law free” pass until they rape or kill somebody.
