Marine Le Pen, leader of Frances extreme right National Front, wasted no time on Wednesday in seeking political advantage from news that the suspected killer of three Jewish children, a Jewish teacher and three Muslim soldiers was a French citizen apparently linked to al-Qaeda. It is time to wage war on these fundamentalist political religious groups who are killing our children, she said.
On the face of it, Ms Le Pen, who regularly attacks immigration and the influence of Islam in French society, stands to gain from what was apparently the first Islamist-motivated terrorist attack in France since 1997 especially as it was evidently carried out by a so-called homegrown terrorist. But in political terms, president Nicolas Sarkozy may well benefit the most. I dont believe [Ms Le Pen] will be able to profit from this, said Philippe Moreau-Defarge of IFRI, the French institute of international relations. At moments like this, people turn to their government. Mr Sarkozy has always put the accent on security, his team have been tough on terrorism and the police have been very effective [in this case]. Mr Sarkozy has taken care to try to rally the country over the affair.

I guess all those riots don’t count as Islamic motivated violence??
President Sarkozy, as head of state, presided over the funeral of the three murdered soldiers shot down in cold blood in the street in Montauban and Toulouse.
He rallied the French people to honor their fallen heroes, who died defending their country and the French people.
It was a somber, very moving, deeply felt tribute.
At this moment, the cowardly suspect is holed up in his rathole, surrounded by French riot police, who are determined to wait him out in this siege that has lasted more than a day.
It eerily recalls the incident of Sarko and HB, the human bomb, who took a kindergarten in Neuilly hostage, while Sarko was Mayor.
This is a man with nerves of steel, unshakeable determination and moral courage.
May God be with the French people as they fight the homegrown enemy in their midst.
Actually the riots cannot be compared to the cold blooded targeted killings of three French paratroopers and three Jewish children and their father.
Be very careful about making an amalgam of incidents of violence which are law and order incidents, and Jihadist killings by Al Qaida that are terrorism.
I agree, it is only the “expressed” violence that’s noted by the MSM around the world. Nevermind the French women forced to wear burqua’s so they’ll not be raped, the “car-B-Ques” which occur regularly, the riots, etc. I have no doubt the reason the French Police wanted to take this loser alive was to prevent riots.
Let’s see: cars burned and Jewish synagogues blown up. No, no Islamic terrorist attacks since 1997. You just have to overlook. I had a friend living in an apartment in downtown Paris. He was concerned that his balcony was 7 stories up from a synagogue.
I like Sarko too. And the LePens have been anti-Semetic in the past, no?
We all, Jews, Christians, Hindus, Atheists, we all better realize we have a common enemy.
We really seem not to get that yet.
(Not those of us here on FR, we do get it, but those others, they are not getting it, not digging it, not groking it at all.)
“Forced to wear burqas”? Hardly. You do know that burqas are banned in France, do you not?
yitbos
Mohamed. That name rings a bell.
Wasn’t that the name of 10,000’s other murderers in recent years?
"fundamentalist political religious groups"? Is she afraid to say the word Muslim? Or does she believe that Christians and Jews are engaged in similar terrorism?
Christine Le Pen’s father was anti-semitic, yes, but I do not think that Christine is — rather she has been extremely pro-Israel and pro-Jewish. Probably she realizes, unlike her father, that Jews are not “the enemy”...
They were banned only recently, dear. And by “forced” I refer to the women’s decision so as to not be harrassed by muslim “youths”.
Yeah, whatever. Have you actually been to France?
Marine Le Pen is her father’s protégé and clone. She has tried to clean up her father’s racist anti-Semitic world view to trick people into voting for her.
MLP’s pseudo populist disguise is thin, and reveals her for the neo-fascist clone of her neo-Nazi father that she is.
Marine le Pen has refused to distance herself from those
views. The FN is anti-American, anti-free enterprise, anti-capitalist, anti-globalist etc. Change her last name and she is interchangeable with the far left nutters and the OWS crowd, as well as the network of neo-Nazis, skinheads, and neo-fascists she pals around with.
MLP has aligned herself with the anti-American, anti-capitalists and Statists, the closest thing to Fascism weve seen.
The merger of far right nationalism and the leftist anti-capitalist, (anti-liberale), economic agenda is personified by MLP. It is called Fascism, a term the French are still uncomfortable with and are afraid to use when describing MLP & her movement.
MLP is not any kind of Conservative, Far Right, Right, or otherwise . American Conservatism is a political philosophy based upon the God-given rights of the individual as expressed in the Declaration of Independence & the Constitution, and free market Capitalist principles.
MLP is a Statist which is the total opposite of Conservative. MLP believes in the power of the State over individual rights & Liberty, government control & has no problem with the soft tyranny of authoritarian government. In the past, the Communists & many others on the Far Left have voted FN. Much of her support is coming from the far left.
The anti-European, anti-globalization message of MLP is shared by many on the Far Left. They might see that as a greater evil than creeping fascism, which they have never had a problem with in the past.
MLP, Socialists, Communists, Greens & every shade of red, are all Statists who believe in the power of the State over the individual rights set forth in our Founding Documents, The US Constitution and The Declaration of Independence.
Tocqueville himself warned against this possibility of what he called soft tyranny. We Americans listened up. Apparently even the French ignored his warnings.
The odds of MLP winning are minuscule. But she has succeeded where her father never could, in mainstreaming the xenophobic, anti-Semitic, anti-free market agenda, and making it acceptable.
All those neo-Nazis, skinhead groups she pals around with? They’re just folks who love their country, share some ideas, meet for coffee and a little waltz... nothing sinister, right?
Go play your games elsewhere, I haven’t the time.
The burqa has been banned in France for a year,
President Sarkozy has taken a strong stand and implemented laws and policies to limit the growth if radical Islam, unlike any other European country.
He has proposed curbing immigration, social benefits and a few years ago prohibited the wearing of the head scarf in schools and public institutions.
I, and many of our longtime posters here on FR have lived in France, or spent time there, know and understand French culture & society, and French politics. The situation in France, and the French elections interest many if us.
Uh...OK. Why don’t you just say “no”.
Yes, one year. Before that there were reports in Gates Of Vienna and other sites about French women feeling compelled to wear islamic dress to avoid harrassment or violence. This is also the case in Sweden, where some blonde girls have taken to dyeing their hair brown to avoid the attention of muslim males.
