Santorum Backer Foster Friess Apologizes for Contraception Comment
CBS News ^ | Brian Montopoli

Foster Friess, a major donor to the super PAC backing Rick Santorum, has apologized for a joke about contraception that prompted outrage from women's groups.

"Back in my days, they used Bayer aspirin for contraceptives," Friess said on MSNBC on Thursday, adding: "The gals put it between their knees, and it wasn't that costly."

The implication was that women held the aspirin between their legs, which left them unable to open them.

In a statement on his website, Friess said the "joke bombed," writing that "many didn't recognize it as a joke but thought it was my prescription for today's birth control practices."

"In fact, the only positive comments I got were from folks who remembered it from 50 years back," he continued. "Birth control pills weren't yet available, so everyone laughed at the silliness on how an aspirin could become a birth control pill."

In view of some of the comments I received when I posted Foster Friess telling the asprin joke, I should make it clear that I thought the joke was funny and a comment on our times.

If I wanted to criticize Mr. Friess, I would tell him he went belly-up all too quickly in the face of negative media attention. He should have stood his ground, as he had nothing he need apologize for.

I am a Newt supporter, Santorum is my alternative, and I am unapologetically anti-Romney. ~A.~

Even suggesting avoiding premarital sex is a mortal secular sin.

*NEVER* *EVER* apologize to the Left.

It always gives them the moral higher ground.

And given that they HAVE no morals, what’s the point in surrendering to them?

Yeah cowardly behavior in this apology tour.
I mean, he made Andrea Mitchell sooo upset. Big f’ing deal.

I though Santorum was supposed to be the crusader for “family values”.

So his team makes one semi-controversial statement, gets some push back and now they are in full scale retreat.

Not exactly the Knights Templar of American politics are they?

I thought it was a great line! Too bad he had to back track, but I understand why he did. Andrea Mitchell was appalled. BFD in my mind. She’s a tool anyways. He was simply telling it like it used to be in this country.

As the "Old Timer" on the Fibber McGee show would have said: "That's pretty good, Johnny, but that ain't the way I heered it. Way I heered it, one fella says to 'tother fella, saay, he says, have you heered about the Catholic birth control pill? It's a Saint Joseph aspirin held between the knees!"

The guy is an idiot.

Aspirin cost money, and crumble easily.

You’re supposed to use an acorn.

I can not believe how stupid, coarse, and super-”sensitive” our modern generations have become: this very ancient joke is considered offensive, while a 4 YO on prime-time TV mouthing the F-word isn’t.

I agree with you. I grandmother used to tell that joke, and my dad took up the joke and used it often. I wish the honorable Mr. Friess had not backed off on it. The aspirin joke is a joke, but abstinence isn’t. We are not animals, therefore, with self control, we can go long periods and even lifetimes without acting like a bunch of dogs in heat.

A lot of misery could be remedied by ladies just saying no and gentlemen listening and respecting them.

As we all knew he would...

The “aspirin method” may have disappeared, but then so have the real men.

His comment was a saying when I was a teenager...

As a woman I am not offended by what he said...

I thought it was ridiculous that the media made such a big deal over his original comment, but that wasn’t surprising. This apology IS a surprise - what he said was pretty funny and right on the mark. Another conservative caving under the pressure.....

Did they even have Aspirin back before Andrea Mitchell became the inspiration for twin beds?

I confess to being old enough to remember that joke! I thought it was hilarious.

It appears that Democrats can’t ‘take a joke’!

He should have modified the joke. Back in my day, gals practiced birth control by having a face like yours Andrea. It works every time...

“Back in my days, they used Bayer aspirin for contraceptives,”

IMO,it depends how old you are if any offense is taken. Back in the day, my high school days, late 50’s early 60’s, talk of contraceptives was a quiet and personal matter. You usually waited outside the pharmacy for a older guy who went inside to purchase condoms for you. I believe the country is headed toward moral bankruptcy.

Totally MIND-BOGGLING that this innocuous, good-natured joke was treated like some grand cultural crime, while the whole TV/media world is absolutely awash in stomach-churning degeneracy, which these same ‘critics’ would never utter a word against.

Very disappointing to see both Friess and Santorum apologize and back away. I’m sick of the GOP grovelling before all those disingenuous slimeballs in the media the moment they raise their voices in disapproval. This is how the leftists wind up always ‘owning’ conservatives.

The article you posted is on the CBS news website, and it references both Foster Freiss’ website and this morning’s CBS interview of Santorum.

Did you see Santorum being interviewed by Charlie Rose on CBS This Morning?
