The Secretary of the Navy announced on Friday that a new littoral combat ship will be named after former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.).
The announcement comes the same day that President Obama signed the last piece of legislation sponsored by Giffords, a bill aimed at reducing drug trafficking along the American borders with Canada and Mexico.
Giffords, who recently stepped down from office, was the target of a shooting rampage in early January 2011.
“The name this ship bears and the story represented by that name will inspire all those who come in contact with her,” said Navy Secretary Ray Mabus at a naming ceremony at the Pentagon Friday.
Giffords appeared at the ceremony with her husband, former Rep. Ike Skelton (D-Mo.) and Roxanna Green, the mother of Christina Taylor-Green, the 9-year-old girl who was killed at the Giffords shooting last year.
Mabus said that Green would be the sponsor of the USS Gabrielle Giffords.
The ship named after Giffords is a littoral combat ship, a smaller ship designed for operations close to the shore. The USS Gabrielle Giffords is the Navy’s 10th LCS ship.

Lucky for her, I guess, that the ship wasn’t a destroyer. I’ll wait patiently to see the shoulder patch. Maybe the boat will be an escort for the Jimmah Carter? Sounds like Obamuzzie is building a hanger fleet?-—launched, parked, and never seen again.
Not familiar with combat ships named after women. Are they sure this doesn't make the new vessel a clitoral combat ship?

I share your sentiment: sorry she got shot, happy she survived, and hopeful she makes as full a recovery as is possible.
I would just modify the question you asked to be specific to the Navy/naval services:
“Prior to being shot, what acts in support of the U.S. Navy/naval services did Representative Giffords perform that were so outstanding that they merit naming a US Navy combatant ship after her?”

I agree. Living people should not have anything named after them unless they are private citizens who donate some of their own wealth in the creation of whatever is named after them. Never ever should a politician have their name on something that tax payers purchased.
It would be more appropriate to name the ship after the little girl who was killed in the Giffords shooting, than Gabby Giffords. IMHO.
how about him doing a bill to stop gun running, oh wait that is he and his pals like Holder who are doing the gun running.
Weird how the MSM does not seem to think that Holder, the DOJ, the white house etc doing gun running to the drug lords who in turn murder hundreds and our own border agents is not news worthy .
I don’;t know who does the strategy fro the GOP but if I was doing it I would be calling out the MSM, and get on live TV every day demanding to know the answers and not just putting up with this admin saying the 5th

I think she was one of the few slightly moderate Democrats. That is why the lefty was mad at her, left the horrible rants on Facebook, and then went on the shooting spree. He thought she betrayed the left.
FYI the only “dead” rule is for destroyers. We’ve had a couple lately named after Navy Seals who gave it up. The rest , however, are judgment calls. Not only do we have carriers Reagan and Bush but sub Carter. The brass knows if they get too dopey they won’t be able to keep a crew on board. This one might get quietly renamed——riding the “Gabby Giffy” might turn out to be a non-crew-draw?
Why is it the “Giffords shooting”? WHy not name it after the federal judge?

This is satire, right? Right? Please, somebody tell me this is satire.
Why not name the ship after the federal judge who was actually killed whose name they never mention (IIRC he was an R, that’s probably why). Instead, after a Dem whose sole claim to fame was that she took a bullet.
What about the JUDGE? He was killed. Sick.
