Is Mitt Romney a Billionaire?

Posted on 01/30/2012 9:49:38 AM PST by pinochet

In an interview im Miami with the Hispanic journalist, Jorge Ramos of Univision, who asked him what he was worth, Mitt Romney claimed he is worth between $150 million to 200 million dollars. http://www.boston.com/Boston/politicalintelligence/2012/01/mitt-romney-says-net-worth-about-million/QYUE2XtKi7rrMubEGYrnwL/index.html

Romney is the founding CEO of Bain Capital, one of the largest private equity firms in the world. In a documentary that Newt Gingrich's PAC ran in South Carolina, the value of Bain was put at $65 billion dollars.

Founding CEOs usually retain ownership of a large number of shares in the firms that they founded. For example, Microsoft is worth $219 billion, and Bill Gates is worth $59 billion.

http://www.celebritynetworth.com/richest-businessmen/richest-billionaires/bill-gates-net-worth/

http://gigaom.com/apple/apple-overtakes-microsoft-in-market-value-end-of-an-era/

Bill Gates, the founding CEO of Microsoft, has a networth that is equivalent to 27 percent of Microsoft Shares, and most of that networth is in actual Microsoft stock. If Romney's networth was equal to 27 percent of Bain Capital, Romney would be worth $17.5 billion.

Assuming that Romney owns 10 percent of Bain, he would have a networth of $6.5 billion. I find Romney's claim that he is worth $200 million, or 0.3 percent of the value of Bain, to be laughable. But even if he was worth $200 million, that would still make him the richest President in American history.

America is the land of free enterprise, and any person has the right to make as much money as he wants, as long as he does not ask middle-class American taxpayers to bail him out when his deals go sour.

However, Americans have the right to know of the financial dealings of their elected officials, in order to avoid conflicts of interest. Why does Romney keep much (or most) of his money in foreign countries like Switzerland? That is something we associate with third world dictators. Why can't Romney keep his money in America, where it can work to benefit the American people?

Rich Lowry of National Review described Romney as "The Last Wasp", and noted that he has the old fashioned discomfort that Wasps had in talking about their wealth:

I hope his discomfort in talking about his wealth, did not cause him to lie about his net worth.

It is hard for a man who is rich and warm to understand a man who is cold.

I would certainly like to have an open explanation from Romney about why his bank/investment accounts in 23 different foreign countries were NOT included in his Financial Disclosure papers.

He had to have signed those papers.

Either he is lying about what he owns & WHERE it is -—— or he is not as talented as a ‘business man’ as he thinks he is and he claims he is.

He needs to reveal how this kind of an ‘OMMISSION’ could possibly have happened. I don’t want to hear that an accountant made the error, either,

Mitt SIGNED the forms.

Romney is not a WASP, he is not Protestant.

I don’t care how much money he has.

I don’t care that he’s a Mormon.

All I care about is his politics, which is why I hope he doesn’t become the nominee

He can’t be a WASP since he isn’t a Protestant.

With a financial empire so far flung and complex will he be able to tranfer the whole mess to a blind trust? Has anyone ever asked him?

He is not uncomfortable talking about his wealth. He told us on day one of his campaign that he bought his wife a $10 million mansion on the ocean in La Hoya and was going to tear it down and build a $20 million mansion - as a thank you gift for all she would have to put up with during the election.

The fact that he thought this would give everyone a warm fuzzy fealing towards him shows that he has no perspective on his great wealth or how typical voters might react to such a tremendous extravagance.

>>>Romney is not a WASP, he is not Protestant

It was Rich Lowry, Editor of the National Review, who called him a Wasp.

It is important to note that many (if not most) Mormons in America, are descended from Anglo-Saxon and Celtic Protestants who trace their roots to America before the Civil War. Some Mormons trace their heritage to the Puritans in New England, who lived during Colonial times. Mormons are very keen in maintaining genealogy records.

Romney is a WASM - a White Anglo-Saxon Mormon. Mr. Lowry got the religions of his Anglo-Saxons mixed up.

I knew it was Lowry saying it.

It isn’t important at all to know the roots of the original Mormons, even if we do, for at least decades, perhaps generations, Catholics have been probably their most fertile hunting ground.

Mormonism is Mormonism, the religion of ancestors has no meaning.

Mitt’s family immigrated here in 1841 to serve Joseph Smith.

I wasn't aware that this was an issue for conservatives. It's not illegal, so why does it matter?
