Tim Thomas, Boston Bruins goalie, snubs President Obama
By DONOVAN SLACK | 1/23/12 3:14 PM EST
There was a notable absence during a White House reception this afternoon for the Stanley Cup champion Boston Bruins: star goalie Tim Thomas.
Thomas refused the invite for "political reasons," Sports Illustrated reports.
The goaltender was the only member of the Bruins who wasn't at the ceremony, where President Obama congratulated the team on its victory. Thomas is a staunch conservative and is expected to explain his snub of the president on his Facebook page this evening.

Well, at least we're keeping it in the Original 6 family.
After the Red Sox won the World Series and Curt Schilling became a vocal Conservative. People I know actually started downplaying Schillings contribution to the win. Even going so far to say they wished he never came here. Tonight I expect a few, “Tuka Rask was the better goal tender last year”.
What is it with athletes with the initial's TT....they have ethics, faith and big cojones!
Actually I always sort of liked Thomas’ unorthodox style and moxy and knack for stepping up when it counts. Now it all makes sense.
While I understand Mr. Thomas taking a political stand. I wonder if this diminishes the Office of the Presidency.
I have an excellent recording of Frank Sinatra performing for President Nixon at a State Dinner for the Italian Premier around 1973. Sinatra, was well known for supporting democrat candidates, in face he even campaigned for H. Humphrey in the 68 race. I thought it was classy of Sinatra to put politics aside and perform for the White House.
I do not support Obama and obviously Thomas doesn’t support him either. But the Office of the President does require a certain amount of respect.
I suppose that the argument could be made that Obama invites the Bruins to the W.H. to prop up his own image and thusly Thomas would not want to be used as a prop.
But Tim Thomas is now my favorite hockey player.
My son refused to get his Eagle Scout paperwork because it would have been signed by Bill Clinton. I tried to talk him out of that decision, but couldn't. Character Counts.
I would - it is a serious breach of etiquette to snub the head of state. I despise Obama, but I have great respect for the Office of President of the United States. I would go and be civil. Cold, but civil. And if I just couldn't bring myself to go, I sure as hell would come up with a face-saving excuse - a sudden illness, a dying grandmother - something. I think it is disrespectful to announce "political differences". I have little respect for the liberal types who snubbed Bush and I don't intend to emulate them.
Possibly I would wear a "Gingrich '12" button - I also value the first amendment. But, I also believe in civility.
Luckily, I have no reason to fear a White House invitation.
I can’t imagine standing there accepting an award from a fraudulent, marxist president. My principles are more important than getting a handshake from this man/child. I support his stance and would have likewise declined to be there. There are some things more important than sports and awards from fake presidents.
I don’t think he’ll be booed. Bruins fans are mostly blue collar conservative types. If he shows up at a Starbucks, then maybe.
I came to the conclusion in roughly 1974 that if you even show up in the same venue as these socialist nutballs, you add to their credibility.
I have refused to do so since, even if ordered or encouraged to do so by employers, clients or coworkers.
Love your comment and abigkahuna’s too. Totally agree. The OFFICE of President should be respected. The PRESIDENT....not so much.
I would do the same. Also that would apply to the trailer trash of the last Dem administration.
yet.
Oh no, now Zero will get angry and remember that hockey pucks are environmentally unsafe, climate-changing fossil-fuel derivatives. He’ll force the EPA to mandate only union-made, linseed-derived organic whiffle-pucks.
LOL. Years ago my youngest daughter who was in grade school at the time was asked to do a performance with a group for then POTUS clinton. My daughter 'declined' and when questioned by some teachers and the principal, she said 'because he's a jerk'. The principal called me and I laughed and said. sorry, I happen to agree with her.
While his politics aren’t common knowledge among many hockey fans, Thomas hasn’t hidden his political leanings. He’s a fan of former Fox News Channel host Glenn Beck, once saying he aspired to appear on Beck’s talk show as a guest.
Big Government, a website founded by conservative blogger Andrew Breitbart, celebrated Thomas as a “true Tea Party patriot” for having “In God We Trust” and the Gadsden flag on his mask. From Big Government:
In addition to displaying his support for the Tea Party on the ice, Thomas is a FreedomWorks donor, giving generously right before the historic November 2010 elections, according to the FEC.
Schilling, in case any FReeper does not know, was instrumental in the Red Sox winning the World Series in 2004. He underwent experimental surgery on his ankle twice just before the World Series. Without him, the Sox do not win the World Series. He should be revered as a hero in Boston but bring his name up around a lib Red Sox fan and watch them lose their minds.
Why? the man endorsed Bush on public television and the liberals went berserk. They could not deal with learning someone they admired and loved was a Conservative. But why would anyone expect a rational, balanced reaction from a liberal.
Pens fan here but I love Tim Thomas! I’ve been looking at a couple of Bruins fan boards and they’re solidly against him. If Bruins fans drive him out of town, the Pens could take him in. Pittsburgh fans don’t care if players don’t want to go to the White House. James Harrison’s refused twice.
TT might find himself magically detained in Gitmo for unknown reasons. How dare he turn his back on the One
That's raaaaaacist.
